This is what happened to a multitude of gods and religions that are now taught in schools as mythology courses.

Is this why Christians are so hopped up on converting and saving other religions and non-believers? Is this not so that the soul/spirit of the dead can ascend into heaven, but rather so that the idea of a God can live on?

Scotty: If god can "fill" you with the holy spirit then he can "fail" at something. This is what happened to Zeus, Isis and Quetzalcoatl. No new followers, religion falters, god dies out and becomes myth rather than religion. How hard is that to understand?

Jaye, had you lived over two thousand years ago, you would be saying the same thing about other gods in place of your one god today. Reflect upon how vehemently you would be defending Jupiter or Juno if you were living in Rome before Christ was born. No different now or then...just dead gods and myth.

If you look at all the world's major religions, only Christianity and Islam actively recruit followers. Judaism can only be passed from the descendant of a Jewish woman, so they don't actively seek converts. Buddhism in all forms i know avoid preaching religion at all, and don't necessarily focus on concepts of god. Honestly I don't know much on Hinduism.

Now, should a god who loses his followers be relugated to the land of mythology? Aren't all god's in the relam of mythology? The manifestation of a concept, that sounds like any monotheistic or pagan god i've ever understood.

A god with no followers becomes just another peice of literature.

Good Question. But God isn't a myth, he has always existed, He existed BEFORE man.

The other 'gods' were probably created by Atheists trying to cause problems...lol, okay, just kidding.

I am a Christian, but please don't be alarmed, I promise not to save you.

I don't care if you or anyone else becomes a Christian, that isn't part of my belief system, it is not my job.

Not all Christians believe the same, it rather confusing I know.

Your questioning is backwards. It is not God that fails, but His followers. If you worship an eternal God, then He is just that, Eternal and unchanging. Religions come and go based on it's followers.
If your questioning is based on the "g"ods of old, I would agree that they have failed simply because they were man made gods, unable to fulfill the outreaching of their followers. But to understand the theology of Christianity one must realize the difference it has over all other faiths. The eternal God of Christianity is a God that reaches down to His people and not His people reaching up to him. We reach out to others in our love simply because He first reached out to us. If any Christian does anything less than that, is not following the will of the Father.

Christians spread the Word of God to simply share His goodness and grace. You don't force conversion by beating them with a bible, but by acting, walking, responding as a true Christian, what better way to advertise! I personally would never force the Word of God to anyone, I simply live my life as a Christian, and share and testify about His grace where it is appreciated. Christians believe that yes, after this life is over, you will then eternally be in Heaven, and yes, it would be great to see your loved ones there, as well. Christians cannot "save" anybody, only Christ can do this, we simply introduce the non-believer to the Word of God, never force down their throat. Anyone who does this is a zealot, not a Christian. You can't force anyone to be saved. Christ is and forever will be, the Alpha and Omega, He doesn't need us to help him "live" on.

I find it funny how you start out by making God responsible for capturing followers, yet you revert to Christians being upset about conversion rates.

Gods will always exist in the minds of men, religions are like clubs, they go in and out of favor with people.

Religion isn't alive. It doesn't actively know what its doing. The collective people who follow said religion would have little concern over such macro-implications. Their desire to actually convert people is more akin to winning one of God's many merit badges for Good Christianity. It's all selfishness, and has absolutely nothing to do with the future of said religion.

LOL. Belief in the Christian God has existed since the beginning of recorded history (with the Hebrews), and it will exist as long as mankind exists. Those who wish otherwise ... I don't think you understand what you're wishing for. With the loss of God would go all moral standards and all reasons for humanity, understanding, compassion, and kindess.

I think they're all doomed to fade into mythology at some point (although perhaps replaced with new religions) because religion is largely society-contingent, and societies don't last forever.
