In a case such as you have described it is best to use some tact.
Instead of going in I would call and explain that I am not feeling well and ask if I could take the day off.
If I was needed I would go in after letting the boss know that it would not be a productive day.
Bottom line is you are getting paid to produce. There are a bunch of other people walking around waiting for you to mess up so they can take your place.
There is no one in the workplace that can't be replaced.

At my work I am the boss and i would probably tell you to go home and start looking for a new job. Nothing personal but while you are there you are getting paid to work, nothing in life is free and no one wants to work all the time, but that is why you have sick time and vacation. I suggest looking up "work ethic".

My boss tries to take a real interest in all of our lives so he would sit down and ask what is going on in my life. I think in the end he would try to find something easy for me to do or he might even let me go home.

Depending on their mood and which boss they would either say "ha ha me neither" or "well, if you don't want to work than go home.. why don't you take the rest of the week off? As a matter of fact why don't you just not come back"

If I were the boss, my response would be, "OK, then I just don't feel like paying you for the day, if you just don't feel like working."
When you are at your job, except for short breaks, you work. That is the contract you have made with your employer. If you don't like it, get a different job.

My boss would would come over sit down and start talking. he would not mind one bit. he is a good guy and is retirien in like 90 days so he is not overly stressed. Plus 98% of the time I am ahead of the game on stuff.

I'm not sure exactly what the response would be, but I can certainly tell you it wouldn't be good. No manager wants to have somebody like this in the workplace. Bad attitudes like this are contagious, and the best solution (like cancer) is removal of the problem.

I have an office job, but my boss would probably tell me to take the day off. She's pretty awesome.

Wll first of all, if u are still new at work, the Boss wll try to ask you whats wrong with u , or maybe hell put it that way, "if u feel like not working u can leave, or if something wrong u can tell me",
anyway its always to predict ur boss's reaction, cuase it totally depends on his personalty.
My advice to u , go to him and tell him what u really feel of working , cuase if u didnt feel like working you wll be waisting ur time.
