fyi...sometimes some of us nonbelievers do emphasize the mental in the term fundamental by putting it in all caps

Because labeling them as "mentals" is too judgemental. Who are we to say that their belief is a result of a mental problem rather than being plain stupid? Since when is stupidity a crime? Last time I checked it was the right of every human to be as stupid as they want... as horrible as it may seem.

Although, I cannot agree that all fundies are mental - most of them prove themselves to be, but some are just ignorant and misled.

Some do. Both are derogatory terms that are used, so what difference does it make. We've been called much worse. Doesn't bother us. Consider the source.
