If he is stressed out, this is common..I would tell him that you want to help take some of the stress off of his life, and tell him to get a big tablet and write down everything he needs to get done as he finds them out..and then let you help him take care of things..ask him if you can think of things to do for him that he usually does himself, and maybe just forgot..yes, because he is getting old is one thing, but stress and depression can be a factor...just hang in there and start thinking of him, but don't kid or razz him about it.

You can help your dad by posting lists, reminding him of appointments he has, remind him of any meds he takes on a daily basis and check on him daily. If it is more then "not caring", you will see it with time. In that case it will become important to keep him safe. You may preventatively check out the options available in your area. There are the dreaded nursing homes, assisted living, adult daycare and in home caregivers. I run a small Senior Care company and we have a client who we have been able to keep at home since the last three years, first with caregivers just during the day, now, as he is declining, 24/7 care. It frees the family, who are all busy with their own careers and lives, to come in and enjoy the visits instead of having to worry about the little things.

How old is he? What kind of things is he forgetting? You should add more info.
