I think someone already said this, but my experience has been to use baby shampoo and gently bathe the cat. You will see some of the fleas falling into the water. When you are finished, don't take the towel out from under the cat after drying off a bit, take a flea comb and go through their fur with it. Might take a while, so be prepared.
You will also see some fleas climbing out of the wet fur on their face. Use tweezers or your fingers to get them off and make sure you kill the fleas or they will hop right back on the cat, or you for that matter.
Once you get rid of what fleas you can, do as one other said and use some vinegar and water mixed and rinse out the fur. Might smell some, but won't last long and won't hurt kitty. Careful of the eyes though!

Basically any type of soap/shampoo will kill fleas when left on for awhile. (when you tweeze off a flea and put in soapy water, watch it die quite quickly).
As far as home remedy,... nothing with lasting effects.

Buy a flea comb, and a flea collar they are cheap. I wouldn't put vinegar on my cats, it may dry out their skin, I don't really know if it does, but as strong as vinegar is it may burn, especially if they have any scratches or open wounds.

Rub a thick layer of Mineral Oil (unscented) on the cat's fur and rub the Mineral Oil to the skin; then comb the cat if short haired.
if long haired; clip the cat's fur to short; then follow above treatment.
repeat weekly; the oil kills the fleas. vacuum.

Homemade, no. Frontline spray really works. Don't experiment on your cats.

vinegar mixed with water seems to work
(even though the thought of vinegar on a cat makes most people think twice about it, as long as you dont get it in their eyes it only harms the fleas)
