I seem to have a problem staring at people, it just happens that my gaze happens to be particularly unsettling from what I'm told, along the lines of sharp, icy, piercing, intense, etc. I don't want to make people uncomfortable, or to intimidate anyone but, it seems to happen regardless. Is there anything i can do beyond not looking at people...?

If someone catches you looking at them, just SMILE.
They may think you're up to something, but you wont look "icy" or "piercing"

You look at people for a reason. Now the challenge is to discover what it is you are looking for. I'm an artist and I know that I look at people to study faces, figures and gestures. However I don't think I look long enough to call it a stare. Become aware of what you are thinking when you "stare". The answer is there. Looking longer than is comfortable is related to the issue of personal space. People have varying tolerance for others being too close to them. Likewise when someone sees that they are being looked at it creates tension in them as if you were in their space.

Maybe if you are going to stare at them you can say something to them so they dont feel as uncomfortable. Just start a conversation, then you can stare at them and it will be ok because they will be talking!!

When you are talking to someone, make sure and glance away at times, or look at other parts of their face, not deeply into their eyes, most people don't like the idea of people "seeing" them too clearly.

Get some mirrored - (one way) sun glasses - then you can stare to your heart's content, but nobody will know.

Move to Europe, where everyone stares at everyone---it's like a national sport there.
