I took a train from toronto canada to albany, ny with our youngest when she was 4 weeks old (8 hours) . She slept most of the way, only waking to be fed and changed.

You can travel with a newborn. Make sure you swaddle/wrap her in a receiving blanket and then with a carriage blanket. Keep a blanket over your car carrier when she is outside. While driving make sure your car is warm. Remember if your chilly, a newborn is cold. Also newborns prefer being tightly swaddled. They have just spent 9 mos inside you where its pretty cramped. Their little body systems just can't handle all the changes of this big new world, including how big their world has just become. It's important to remember newborn - 3 mos they cannot regulate their own body heat. So dress the child warmer than you would dress. It would be best to feed her in your car since going into restaurants, rest stops... etc will expose the child to a multitude of viruses, bugs and flu's. Cold weather in and of itself isn't a bad thing. Just make sure you keep the child dressed to prevent a chill. Personally I don't think I would want to fly with a child this young, for exactly the reasons you state. Congrats on your pregnancy and your new job. Good luck with L & D as well as the move.

I think an 8 hour trip will be easy!
My daughter was 3 months old when my husband and I packed up our car and a Uhaul trailer and moved back to Wisconsin, from Phoenix, AZ! It was a 31 hour drive. She was wonderful! She did sleep the majority of the time. I massaged her body, shifted her sitting position, changed her diaper in her carseat (I know, but diaper pads and wet wipes are for a reason), and kept her entertained with books and small toys. Unfortunately, I was not able to drive more than 2 hours during the entire trip because she wanted me to sit next to her. My husband drove nearly straight through, except for stopping at gas stations, to eat, the two times she wouldn't stop crying and to sleep for 4 hours.
My husband and I did research before she was born to decide which would be the safest means for our daughter to travel. Flying was out of the question due to health risks of flying and just being in an airport. The massive amount of people in an airport exposes your child to a wide variety of illnesses and germs, while the air pressure during a flight can damage their ear drums. Train would have taken too long. Bus was absolutely out of the question.
Good luck!

Sometimes it's easier to travel with a newborn than an older child. If you go at the right time of day they'll sleep most of the way. I used to have to travel to PA (10 hours each way) about once a month with my baby, and I always went at night and he did just fine. We'd stop every couple hours for a diaper change and fresh air. Give yourself plenty of time.

Well, I am not too sure about it if the baby will be that young. The first time I traveled with mine was a couple of weeks before she turned 2 months and it was by plane. I don't see why it would be any problem as long as you realize the trip will be extended with stops now, which you already realize, so your not in for any suprises there! Congrats and good luck!

We traveled from Ohio to Arkansas when our baby was only 2 weeks old. It was not too bad on the way there but the way back took over 13 hours and that was pretty rough. Good luck!

If its in a car, you can travel whenever you feel comfortable doing it. I took a plane trip with my son when he was 6 weeks old. He did great. Frankly he was easier than my 2 year old, he slept the whole time, lol. Good luck!

It's not really a hassle if you're going by car. They sleep so much they don't have a chance to get uncomfortable.
I'm worried about YOU though. You need time to recover from birth. Please don't take on anything that will overwhelm you. Do NOT drive that car yourself! You will be very tired - and sore - those first few weeks. Take care.

I would think as long as you reposition the baby's head often you shouldn't have any other problems. I'm wondering the same thing except for flying. Jennifer
