What are the words people slip into conversation that are just SOOOOOOOO grating to you??
I called them`plug` words as people use them for holes in conversations between breaths when they can't think of anything half decent to say.
For example;
LIKE.
Do teenagers know any other word? Sample coversation...
"*Like* I was with her *like* she's *like* `Oh totally` and I'm *like* yeah, and she's *like* `Whatever`, *like* i'm just sooooo *like* over it. SO then she's *like* saying "I am so totally there *like* with you girl *like*
Others that get to me.... (and my typical reaction)
* YEAH-NO-YEAH........ make up your mind!
* KNOW WHAT I MEAN (or NOWADAMEEN)....... No because you are such a bad communicator
* ETC ETC ETC...... well if I know what you meant from the first part of your converstaion..
* SO ANYWAY.......... (ggrrr... so what)
* YOU KNOW.........(no I dont, keep talking you may get to your point).
* OMG!!!!.................(who is your God??)
Any I missed?

or... people who use their fingers to make out quotation marks.
So, by those guidelines, if I heard a teenager say `Yeah-no-yeah-no, like I was was OMG and she's whateverrrr, and like ummm... totally thinking that are (with fingers) "inimate".. nowadameen", I'll be forced to strangle someone.
And yes - I have to get the bus home, it's a Friday night so I am venting my spleen now

i think you got it all. great question. i especially hate the plug in words when someones asking you a question after every single time their done with their sentence.
i hate it when people say "you know what i mean?!" or "you know what im sayin?!" after every sentence because their so insecure and think you cant understand them or just think your stupid. it sounds degrading, rude and insults/challenges the persons intelligence who hears it repeatedly from the guy that says it. for example, "i was walking my dog down the park one day then.....YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN?!" or "i saw a good movie last weekend, you should buy tickets to watch it before its all sold out YOU KNOW WHAT IM SAYIN?!"
i also hate it when people say "you know" at the beginning and ending of every single sentence because its a prelude to the previous plug in words i dont like which is "you know what i mean?!". example, "you know, i went shopping this weekend and bought me a pair of pants that were on sale, you know?"
i also hate it when i hear people say "OK?!" or "GOT IT?!" in a rude, aggressive, chauvenistic, inconsiderate tone at the end of each sentence because they have doubts that you can get it done or understand something. "Make sure to put it back when your done, OK?!" Have it done in less than one hour OK?!" "Remind me to ask him later, OK?!" "When your doing this, put that over there, not over here, GOT IT?!" "im going to call you back in an hour GOT IT?!"

Everyone does it, but they just dont know. until they ask someone and they are more than happy to tell you what you do try it. you will find you do it too.

Ummm. I hate when people end with "Ummm..."
Right?
So I was walking down the street, right? And saw this really cute guy, right? And so I stopped and started talking to him, right?.....
Or worse than "plug words" for me is when someone talks and every sentence sounds like a question... Kind of like the girl in American Pie..
"This one time? At Band Camp?.... La La Laaaaa La La Laaaaa! Like nails on the chalkboard!!

"Right OK Yeah", (all strung together!) I had to turn a TV programme off yesterday as one person said that every two or three words.
"At the end of the day"
"Scenario"
"Errrrr"
"Umm"
"Ya know"
"Absolutely" used instead of a simple "yes"
Last of all I can't stand the "F" word in any shape or form. It just demonstrates the users complete lack of vocabulary and education.

I kinda think that this is a good question. Have star.
Hmmmm, IMO and purely FYI, I think dat you shud choose my answr as de winner m8.
I also hate the hideous abbreviations in text, sorry txt speak where you basically remove the vowels from e words!
Another pet hate is the incorrect use of apostrophe - my main hate is YOU ARE: YOUR and not YOU'RE... buge the 'freaking' (with fingers) hell out of me, innit!
Ciao for now lol ;-)

I don't suppose you'd call them plug words but the expression "on a daily basis" riles me. What's wrong with "daily" or even "every day". It sounds like a failed attempt to sound intelligent. There are other bits of 'management speak' that get me too.

When english is taught properly one learns not to use those annoying sentence ties. When people use them, you wind up only hearing the ties and not what they are trying to say. I had an english teacher who really stressed learning the correct language and speech skills and it stuck. Oh, and you can add one more to your list....and, um...! Another gem.

The worst phrase i know and this one really grates every time i hear it is: "Leave it with me" What they mean is "Nothing will get done and you wont hear any more about it".
The other phrase that springs to mind is when people say;
"Dont take this the wrong way but.........." I always think "Why not, you're just about to insult me or my intelligence"

I like totally agree!
One thing that bothers me is, - when did gals become guys? It really gets to me when my wife and I go to a restaurant and some young waiter comes up and says "how are you guys doing?" Does he really think my wife is a guy??? I realize lots of folks use the term now, but it is NOT correct.
Gals are gals and guys are guys!
