Atheism is another unfounded belief system - certainty in the existence of nothing outside the physical.
Agnostics take the logical position - we have insufficient information to come to any definite conclusion about the existence or non-existence of God or gods (or any other metaphysical reality).

An atheist has faith that there is no God in the same way that a Christian, Jew or Muslim has faith that there IS a God. An agnostic maintains the right to doubt. Here is my own take on agnosticism, which you may appreciate:

gnostics and agnostics deal with knowledge
theists and atheists deal with belief
Average christians are agnostic theists since they believe in god, but acknowledge that you can never 100% know (faith)
Crazy christians are gnostic theists
Most "atheists" are in reality agnostic atheists becuase while they hold no god belief, they acknowledge that it can never be proven.
gnostic atheists have no belief but in addition say that a god 100% doesn't exist.

Being an atheist is facing reality.
Being agnostic is fence-sitting.

An Atheist does not believe in gods , fairies , angels, or heaven or hell . Agnostics don't know whether to believe it or not . They haven't made up their minds either way .

In my opinion, an atheist KNOWS there is no God.
An Agnostic knows there is no proof either way.
I am agnostic and I have made up my mind, I believe there is a God.

An atheist doesn't believe in the existence of God.... the agnostic doesn't have enough information to believe either way (God's existence or non-existence)

An agnostic is a wimpy atheist. An atheist is a pompous agnostic. They are effectively synonymous in my opinion, it is just how people decide to use the nuanced differences in the terms that indicates something.

Atheists declare they are not theistic
Agnostics say they must have proof in order to believe something
"Commonly" people see it this way
Atheists say there is no god(s) or goddesses
Agnostics say you cannot know if there is or is not a god because neither stance has proof.
