It DOES require a symbolic act if you want to stack the deck so that every human being starts out in debt to the church -- said debt you can then pay off by attending meetings in their little clubhouse with the pointy top, and saying their magic words, and putting money in the collection plate, and tithing earnings, and so on.

As someone much wiser than myself once said: if you want to know the real reasons for people's actions, FOLLOW THE MONEY; and when they insist that it's not about the money, it is ALWAYS about the money.
