I am doing this program (it is due by Christmas time) where I adopt-a-family for Christmas. 2 girls and buying for the mom. One girl is 3 and the other is 12.

I am giving them each 3 books (inculding mom), 4 toys or games (the mom will get a CD player and CDs instead), clothes, and a bathroom basket they can have there stuff inside it and the basket has there name on it.

Any ideas on what clothes, toys, and bathroom supplies they will each need? I also want to do a joint-gift. What could it be? And for the 12 year old should I add sanitary products in her bathroom basket?

give the mom and 12 yr old a robe, and the 3 yr old a hooded towel, they make cute ones that have animal heads for the hood. Do NOT include sanitary products, they may be a necessity but its not what any girl wants to get for x-mas!!! Bubble bath and some bath toys for the 3 yr old, shower gel and shampoo for the 12 yr old, and maybe a pedicure kit for the mom.

Its great that you are doing somehting to give back to the community!! God bless

Walmart would obviously have all that stuff but since walmart is pretty much a terrible company (the way they treat their employees, run out local businesses, ruin the landscape of the towns where they build, etc.) you probably don't want to go there. For the books, go to Barnes and Noble- they have a nice kids section and if you told the employee what you are looking for I'm sure s/he could help you pick out age appropriate books for the kids and suggest some top sellers for the mom, too. If you are going to be buying 9 books, and if you buy books yourself with any regularity I would get a Barnes and Noble membership; I think it is like $40 one time fee and then you save on all books you ever buy there. All books are at least 10% off, but hardback bestsellers are like %30-40 off, even CDs get the 10% off and you said you wanted to buy some for the mom? For the 12 year old's book- I would suggest a Harry Potter book, Chronicles of Narnia, or else Inkheart (all three are age appropriate series which I personally have read and reread and love). For everything else I would say Target, they have the cutest stuff and all pretty fairly priced. If you don't get the CDs at B&N they have them here, too, and for a good price. I used to work there and the kids clothes are so adorable. For the 3 year old I would say you could get most of the tops for between $3-8, bottoms $4-10, and dresses from $8-15. For the 12 year old maybe $8-12 for tops, $10-15 for pants, and$12-18 for dresses. Toys I would suggest for each maybe

1- doll or stuffed animal,
2- leggos or other similar type toy
3- modern board game (cranium has a great line for all ages)
4- one classic game, like monopoly or chess

For bathroom supplies I would say get them each a small basket, maybe 10x8". Fill each with a cute bath poof scrubber thing (they have little ones that look like animals which they would think are soooo cool), a liquid body wash, a shampoo/conditioner from the same brand, and for the older one some body lotion, for the younger one those bathtub crayons or something like that.

For a joint gift... obviously it should be something they can all enjoy or benefit from... Maybe a really good kid's movie like Ratatouille? If you wanted something bigger than that, maybe a DVD player or a gift card?

Hope these ideas help! If you start buying now, with sales at the stores changing every week you should be able to get a pretty good deal on most of this stuff! What you are doing is so nice, I hope everyone really enjoys it (including you).

That's a great idea.. In college I was in a sorority and we did something similar.. We had "families" of sisterhood and each family would adopt a family...To keep the costs down would you consider splitting the cost with some friends? Or other family members? I would go with some basics for the family... A warm hat,mittens/gloves/scarves for each.. You can get them fairly cheaply at Walmart or even a thrift store or Salvation Army... Maybe a warm gently used coat as well for each, some socks/slippers.. Books are a GREAT gift and you can find some really good used books at HALF PRICED BOOKS.. Maybe, a collection of Fairytales or short stories the mother can read to the children... I would make sure any toys you get don't have small pieces for the 3 yr. old maybe some wooden puzzles or some type of learning toys.. The older 12 yr. old maybe some pretty nail polish/manicure kit and some fun hair accesories.. A bath basket is nice put some shower gels, lotions, toilet paper and it might be a good idea to get some sanitary supplies I'd hate to run out. !! Toothbrushes, toothpaste, dental floss, washcloths... You might want to ask your dentist for some donations. Or ask friends/neighbors if they have anything they don't want or aren't using.. Maybe some baby shampoo/lotion.. Call Johnson/Johnson 1-800 on the back of all their products and see if you can getsome money saving coupons or go to the website.. Walmart always has "freebies"..... Good luck and have fun with it.....

She could probably use it, but I would say no...depending on where you're at, if it's cold, I would say you could get coats/boots/heavy socks/tights. That is always stuff that's a little more expensive, but needed. I do the same thing every year and I try to do a few fun things and a few practical things! A family movie/s might be nice for a joint gift. Toys....a 12 year old girl would probably like something electronic or some cute makeup (light, like flavored lip glosses). 2 year old should be fun! Most kid toys have the appropriate age groups on them....just have fun with it! Thanks for doing this, we need more people like you out there helping those less fortunate!

I think that's an incredibly generous, kind thing you're doing, but I don't think sanitary products are appropriate as part of the gift. This is extremely personal, and every woman has her own preference on the type of product she likes, so it's probably best for her to buy her own. However, I think some nice bath products (from the Body Shop) would be a nice inclusion - this is such an indulgence that people wouldn't normally buy for themselves so it would be a great gift to receive.
I wish more people in the world were like you!!!

My work does this every year.

We adopt 3 families and buy the gifts and Santa delivers them.

Now we give them a list in which they are to fill out

1 choice, 2nd choice, 3rd choice
clothing sizes, shoe sizes
necessities.

they include what they really need (coat, boots, pans)
then they include what they would really like to get, 1,2,3 choices.

then we decide what to get after we receive all the donations from the employees.

all I can say is to ask them what would be their ideal gift and get that for them. Maybe one really good gift and a couple of less expensive gifts that they will play with so they have things to open.

Maybe a board or video game for a joint gift?

You don't want to embarass the 12 year old, so I'd say maybe get her a gift card for Wal-Mart or a local drugstore with a little note that says what it's intended for....

You could add nice lotions, bodywashes etc. I think a12 year old would be mortified if you gave her sanitary products.
