For instance, when you are passing someone in the hallway at work or school, if you say "hi" they always say "hi" back. If you wave, they wave back.

Usually. But sometimes when I wave, I just get a smile in return as a greeting. (I'm pretty shy so I don't verbally say hi that often.) But I smile and wave and usually get a smile back, no wave.

Yeah it's true. I also noticed that people will walk by you and say "Hi, how are you." But keep walking before you can respond. Like they are just being polite, but don't really want to know how you are. LOL. People do crazy stuff. :)

If that was the case 100 percent of the time, every hot girl that walked past me would get, " Hi there wanna get busy." Do you suppose I would get that back every time or just get a good kick in the nards. I'll try it and get back to you, NOT. See ya.

its the way they like to say hello... cause if their hello is not as great as you say hello then you would think they dont like you.so they just greet the same way you greet so there is mutual respect for each other... yeaaaa

In most cases that is true, you get back whatever you say.
But in some cases, you get back more than you send.
Just try asking a complainer, "How are you doing?"
They will proceed to tell you, and tell you, and tell you!!!!

Or how about when you ask someone how they are doing and their answer is: "How are you doing?"
Noooo, I want to know how THEY are doing. Can't they answer with a fine/great/miserable etc. and THEN ask me how I am doing?
