Have you ever had to defend yourself with a deadly weapon from an attacker, robber, car-jacker, etc. Not talking about war. What happened? Were police called and did they hassle you?

A POC tried to rob me at gunpoint on 6-7-06 at 2:30am. I was making a night dlvry to a store and he tried to get me as I walked into the rear sec door. He as hiding in the shadows. Saw his outline from a distance and started moving back to my truck. He came out of the shadows with pistol pointed at me. He didn't notice I had a gun in my right hand as I was turned to the right. Caught me in the middle of the lot with a pole light over me. Made a "come here" gesture with his left hand. I brought up my pistol as fast as I could pulling the trigger on the way up. He fired first and I thought "Missed" and mine fired just as it came level with him. My round impacted the steel door about 18" to left of his arm. I put another round in his direction but he was movin' on. Range was about 75". I had a 5-shot 38 snub. He had probably a .25 cal. When cops got there, I showed them my Conc. Carry Prmt and got no flack. One of our other drvrs robbed there about 6 wks past. Same guy maybe. No sh**.

Yes
As a civilian when I was 16. I fought a guy who was trying to rob the store I worked at. Stupid in retrospect.
When I was a cop, I stopped a rape and one car jacking in progress both with knock out drag out fights. It ain't pretty my friend. And it doesn't look like it does on TV.
I also shot at but didn't hit a robbery suspect. He gave up.

Depends on the state and the laws they have with regard to self defense. Usually you are not allowed to use more force than is being used against you. In the case you mention, the other guy did not have a weapon so use of a knife was "excessive force". If the guy had a weapon, any weapon, a club, a golf club, tire iron or something similar that could have have caused serious injury or death, use of a knife would probably be okay. Self defense is different from protection of property etc. and each state has different rules to apply but, the above is usually pretty close to accurate.

Well, not with a weapon, but I did kick a would be robber in the nads when he demanded the keys to my car. Probably not the best of ideas since the crook was waving a knife, but I was PO'ed and my adrenaline was pumping. My husband roughed him up a bit after the crook dropped and pinned him down until the police arrived.
The police laughed. They said the guy had a record a mile long of armed robbery and they said they were glad he got a taste of his own medicine. The police took a statement from us and testified on our behalf since it occurred out of state and on vacation while it happened.

In response to Linda's answer, I'm not sure where you live, but the most likely reason the cops were "annoyed" at you is that in some states you are not allowed to carry "pepper spray" unless you are on your own property - i.e, private property where the property owner is aware and has allowed you to have it. However, despite the law - I'm with you. I rather face a potential minor infraction (assuming you used the spray in proper self defense and not qualifying as "excessive force.") then have something potentially diasterous happen to you.

Not really but I threatened someone who had my cat in the corner and was threatening it was kicks and throwing dirt in its face and spitting at it. I was really shocked at myself afterwards. I saw it, saw red and went out there and pinned the guy by the throat against a wall. Was when I was 17. It was like I had been taken over by the anti christ - I was just so angry someone could threaten my cat (who was terrified) I didn't think of my own personal safety. Believe me this guy was head and shoulders above me - maybe he was in shock too!
No police called and no hassle but I was worried and shocked afterwards.

Yes. A guy just beat the crap out of his wife and when I went to arrest him he threatened to shoot me with his .45. When he jerked his hand out from behind his back I shot him in the heart. He never got a shot off. His daughter testified that had I not killed him, he would have killed her mother.
