After over a dozen years with my '87 Toyota Camry, it is now time to say goodbye and move on to another car. I'm looking for a used car, no older than 5 years old that will be reliable, safe, and great on gas mileage. Unfortunatley, my budget is tight and I most likely wont' be able to afford another Toyota. Any other recommendations for good used cars under $10,000? or ones to avoid?

I would stay away from the Taurus line, Dodge Stratus (the heat from the exhaust tends to cook the oil.) Also the VW Jetta is very expensive to maintain. You should be able to find a Toyota, Honda or Nissan product that will work well for you. I have always had good luck with GM cars that have the 3.8 litre V6 engine in them. Such as the Buick Lesabre and Park Avenues. I put 240K on a Park Avenue.

Good luck

You can get a good used Toyota for under $10k. Keep in mind, your '87 Camry was considered a compact, so to keep the same general size, a Corolla is what you would want these days.

Personally I prefer German or Japaneese cars for reliablility issues. So if you are getting a good deal on them buy it. As far as american cars goes , I don't have experience on them and hence cannot comment. But you get younger American cars for the samem money. (that doesn't necesseraly mean that they are good).
