I am doing this program (it is due by Christmas time) where I adopt-a-family for Christmas. 2 girls and buying for the mom. One girl is 3 and the other is 12. I am giving them each 3 books (inculding mom), 4 toys, clothes, and a bathroom basket they can have there stuff inside it and the basket has there name on it. Do you think this sounds good? Any ideas on what clothes, toys, and bathroom supplies they will each need. Also I was thinking that instead of toys I get the mom a Boom-Box with some CD's. Does that sound good?

Thank you someone reminded me about a joint family gift. What could that be?

For the 12 year old's bathroom basket should I inculde pads/tampons? There are only females in the house and the sister is only 2.

I would say in the bathroom basket add some shampoo and conditioner and maybe some bars or soap. If they are really poor it's probably hard for them to afford that kind of stuff. I think the radio for the mom is nice, you can get some nice used cd's from the pond shops so you can get more for your money. or try ebay for them.
For clothes it's hard b/c you don't really know there size, maybe get them a wal-mart or target gift card and put for clothes of your choice on there.
This is a very sweet gesture.

Sounds great and I think you are amazing to do that for them =)

Books~
Are awesome gifts for kids and adults =)

Gifts~
For the 12 yr old~ I would get her a CD player and a CD or gift card to the music store.
For the 3yr old~ learning toys and one just fun toy.
For the Mom you could do the Boom-Box thing or get her a nice bottle of Perfume.

Baskets
For Mom& 12 yr old~Lotions,Body Wash,Poufs,Toothbrushes,Face stuff,slippers etc.
For the 3yr old~ I would do the toothbrush, kids, socks, toothpaste, bubblebath, toys for the tub etc.

Clothes are tough~ if you can ask the Mom sizes and styles do that, otherwise I would get gift cards from a children's clothing store and places like Old Navy or Gap. They actually have an "options" card that can be used at all of their stores.

I know gift cards aren't personal but it's hard to buy clothes for other people.

Have a good time with your Project and God Bless =)

Edit: To answer your question... I wouldn't put pads or tampons in there since even though she's 12, might not have her period yet OR would be totally embarrassed by them.

For a family gift~ a Board game like Monopoly would be good or a trivia game. Maybe some craft stuff instead.

Since this is obviously a needy family, another thing that would help is some children cough syrup, tylenol, adult tylenol, tissues, cough drops and a thermometer in a basket would be nice.

From personal experience; when you are on a tight budget, those are things there is just never enough money for.

You can adopt my family. What are you are doing sounds wonderful. As for the children, books are wonderful. The mom might like the cd player and cd's better though. As bathroom supplies, bubble bath or bath beads are great. For the 3 year old, get toys she can play with in the tub. For the clothes, you will have to know their sizes. If you do, nothing sexy though, pj's, sweatshirts that kind of thing. Maybe household slippers to run around in. Have you thought about a joint gift for all of them as a family? Maybe some board games so they can all do something together. You have a good heart. Anymore ideas, just email me. Good luck and have fun.

Sounds good. For the three year old, but more bath TOYS in the basket. Bubble bath, etc. can cause bladder infections, and most parents don't like 3 year old to have a lot of that stuff. Maybe some cute bath mitts to wash with. For the 12 year old go with the fruity fun stuff. And mom would probably like some of her own to relax. And maybe a small gift card to starbucks or something to treat herself would thrill her.

The three year old isn't going to be overly amused with a boom box, escpecially since sister might hog it. She would probably prefer toys. But the older sister might like a cd or two, if you know what music she likes.

This is a very cool thing for you to be doing, and hopefully it reminds us all of what the holiday's are about. Good job and good luck!

That sounds good :)

The 3 year old I would get her stuff like blocks, crayons and coloring book, an educational toy, and a baby doll. The bathroom stuff for her, walmart usually puts out really cute bath sets for christmas and those little colored soaps that you can draw wit my daughter loved those at her age.

The 12 year old, I don't think I would get toys, kids are growing up really fast, I think I would go with a cdplayer and cd for her as well.. The bath stuff, bubble bath lotions all that anything to make her feel grown up.

For the mom the CD's sound good you might want to get her a maniucre set and pedicure thing too to go along with the bath stuff.

I know that 3 year olds like blocks and play dough, my daughter loves those magic coloring books where the color only works on the paper, and on nothing else. They also make finger paints in the same stuff, check the arts and crafts isle for it. 12 year olds are more into privacy than toys... music and stuff like that. Maybe a cool game to play with friends or something along those lines. Kids are easy as far as bathroom stuff, 3 year olds use kids shampoo/conditioner-
get ones that smell great, a cool puppet glove to wash with, and maybe some bathtub paints. For the 12 year old great smelling shampoo/conditioner and body wash, and a loufa or something. Lotion and body spray of some sort... mini brush and mirror set. Mom might like bubble bath or bath salts, nail files and buffers... stuff to pamper herself with maybe. Clothes, just check sizes and get them for the season, or the next season. You want these people to appreciate the gifts, as well as be able to use them for as long as possible. Your a good person, we do the same thing here... the Angel Tree is what we call it. Good Luck!

a 12 year old probably won't be really impressed with toys, maybe change that for cd's, or possibly a little bit of makeup, to avoid offending anyone with makeup i would suggest light lip gloss or something similar. And a bathroom basket full of stuff is a great idea as long as you keep it age-appropriate and remember that a 12 year old girl will want things very similar to what her mom has cause they all want to grow up so fast anymore.

Sounds great! I adopted a family for Christmas last year. Include winter hats for mom and kids, gloves for mom and mittens for kids, adult and kids socks. For bathroom supplies - bath bubbles for the kids and Calgon, bath beads or salts for mom, new toothbrushes, kids foaming soap and some great smelling soap for mom. For toys - get the 3 year old a doodle board and the 12 year old a board game. The boom-box with cd's for mom is good. Get her some cd's that are inspirational.

Usually there is a wish list that the families have filled out before hand. If not for Mom I would find something more individualized, something created to give her alone time, maybe something to pamper herself. Basic toiletries for mom would be lotions, shampoo, sweet smelling soap, loofah, nail polish, perfume, facial cleanser, and things like that. For three yr old, most kids like Elmo so DVD,s with Elmo, coloring books, big piece puzzles, play dough, and as far as toiletries go, character soap, toothbrush and toothpaste, bubbles, bathtub paints, and maybe a wash cloth and towel that match. For the twelve year old its harder to say. I would ask some kids her age. I think I would get maybe nail polish, glitter, lotion, lip gloss, mani, pedi sets, cute skirts and tops and some babysitters club books or Anne of green gables. I hope this helps and You are doing a great thing.

That sounds perfect. The mom will really appreciate you gettting her a gift too.For the bathroom supplies I would put them in a stocking for each: toothpaste, toothbrush, scented soaps or lotions etc.... If you know the size of clothes then I suggest jeans, and maybe pull over sweaters or jackets for cold weather.
