Lonely, lonely little Chihuahua. We leave our Chihuahuas alone sometimes for a day or two, but we have automatic feeder and waterer. AND there's six to keep each other company. They have a doggy door that leads to a confined, well protected, potty area. Toys are abundant in their little area also.

Depends on how old the dog is, if he's still a puppy then 8 hours is far too long, if he's old and tired then chances are he'll just sleep most of the time that you're gone anyway. People do have to work/study etc so if you can't get away during lunch I'd recommend leaving toys/chewie things, something for him to do basically. If you can get away at lunch to take him out to pee/poop that'd be a good thing. If he's still young then you should employ/bribe someone to come take him out a few times during the time that you're gone and give him lots of attention/training etc when you get back.

I take mine to Camp Bow Wow once or twice a week and he loves to go. They will give them a nap in the middle of the day and you can watch the dogs play through their cameras available online. The really nice thing is that he comes home exhausted and will be quite tired for the whole next day. These places are opening up all over, or I'm sure there are places like this by you. Just go visit first and trust your gut feelings about the place.

Lots of people have to work so with this in mond you have to ensure that your dog is commfortable, they have somewhere they can relieve themselves without being scolded, they have access to fresh water and given that your breed is so small then perhaps a small feed should be left of dry dog food that he acn take if he feels hungry. You do not saw how old the dog is or where you leave him. It is almost better to give to much information rather than not enough only then will you get the most from the responses you receive.

He should be fine for 8 hrs a day alone. Just make sure he does get enough attention when you are home.

I work full-time, so I try to plan my personal schedule along with my dog's schedule. For example, I try not to have things scheduled on weekday evenings so my dog has some companionship time. If I do have something on a weekday evening, I take my dog to dog day care that day so she doesn't spend the entire day, morning till night, alone in her crate. (She normally goes to dog day care at least once a week anyways, to break up the monotony of me not being home with her.)

When he's at home alone, some toys to keep him occupied are helpful too. Just make sure they aren't toys that he could choke on. My dog gets a bone and a kong while I'm away at work. (I avoid giving her rope, plush, or rubber toys while I'm away because she is a heavy chewer and I don't want her to destroy a toy and choke on the pieces.)

Having to be away from home for work or school is a fact of life, unfortunately.

I would have someone let him out at least once especially if this is something that goes on daily(not just every now and then). If this is not an option, then you should be sure to walk him when you get home so he'll get some excersize and change of scenery. Is he in a kennel the whole time? He should have plenty of room to move while you're gone.

If he is anything like my mom and dads he will tear things up. I kept my mom and dad's and put it in the hallway and put up and baby gate just so she would have some room to run around and gave her, her toys, food, etc.....Well I cam home only after about 4 hours and she had chewed a hole in the baby gate and got out in the rest of the house. So really I don't know what to tell you to do with him........Just DON'T put him behind a baby gate (haha).

it is sad for the dog. if you have to make sure he has plenty of fresh water a chew toy or fresh bone. we hate leaving them but we have to earn money to feed them! if it is at all practical it is an idea to have two so they have each other for company. best wishes.
