A doctor prescribed 150 mg of iron supplement for my 5 year old son who has anemia, is that too much?

The doctor said his iron level was 10 and should be above 11. At his physical last year his iron level was 12. Other than that he is a normal healthy 5 year old. My main concern is iron poisoning.

that's an incredibly large dose. Normally if someone is anemic, for a child, the dose would be 20mg a day. I would telephone the doctor and verify this information. If you still feel in doubt get a second medical opinion.

I wonder if the doctor made a mistake? This dosage is approaching the level where toxic effects are likely to occur in a child. It would be good idea to call the Dr's office to check on this. In the meantime, if it was may child, I would go to the store and get a supplement about 1/3 this dosage and use that instead.

in our nephrology clinic we infuse ferrlicit once a month then the patient continues this for about 6-8 months. if your son is on dialysis he will get iron 3x a week. it depends on your sons anemia level. im sure your sons doctor knows what he is doing is he/she a nephrologist? or just a regular doctor? Hopefully your son is seeing a specialist.

once you establish the dosage, i would recommend something called gentle iron which is sold at the vitamin shoppe. i found iron to be very hard on my stomach until i tried this brand.

You can trade him in at my house. I have a 10 month old girl that I would be more than happy to trade with you for.
