PS Elements - how to turn photo b&w then recolor one image in photo?

Question

I have a color photo that I want to turn B&W and then recolor one small image in the picture.

I'm using Photoshop Elements 2.0

Duplicate the background layer

Desaturate the new layer.

Use the eraser tool to selectively erase and see the lower layer and color.

Upgrade to Elements 5 and there are lots better ways to do this.
