Before one deploys to a foreign land they almost always get a quick lessons in the culture of where they are going. BUT it doesn't sink in to all the service members and the 10% is what you hear causing the trouble or complaining about how nasty or boring it is where they were at. Today you have the internet and the CIA puts out a website with basic information you might need to know.

Yes, with a qualification. In the early part of any conflict the military does not have much access to folks who have real knowledge about culture and laws of any culture other than our own. People who speak other languages and understand other cultures are kind of thin on the ground in the US. So in most conflicts the US has been in we are playing catch up throughout the early part of the conflict. And we almost never have enough real experts. That, however, is a fault that can be traced more to American education than the US military.

Yes, but the the 2 hour class on Arabic Culture is normally not the priority of the Soldiers at the time. They are more interested in trying to get his cable and cell phone turned off before they deploy.

Yes, I learned that Osama bin laden was the 56'th child and I learned what gestures not to make to offend, and there was no drinking in country, so during march, we got fake beer on post for the marti graw celebration out on by MWR.
FYI, some soldier actually made some moonshine, got drunk, drove a military vehical and got a DUI in Kuwait. Believe it or not.

There are courses held for that such thing. It is much more prevelent for the middle east than for other countries since there are taboos (dont talk to the women, never show the bottom of your feet to an Arabic man and more). This things are more important these days than in the past.

I was in the Navy and before going ashore in foreign and even other cities inside the US, we were given a port brief, It's would provide information on local customs, laws, areas to avoid, money exchange, and phone numbers, etc.
Prior to deployment we would have briefs on security while abroad, dress code, etc.
Depending on which branch you are in and where you are going, I would have to say yes.

yes. In fact, even spouses and children go through an Orientation brief. I spent a week learning simple phrases, how to use the train system and proper etiquette when we moved to Japan.
