My love bird will be 3 months old on the 17th of this month. I got him just over 2 weeks ago. I can not no matter what I try get him to eat fresh friuts OR veggies. I have even removed his seed cup and replaced it first thing in the morning when he is hungryest with fresh fruit (apples, pears, grapes and so forth) and he will taste but NOT eat them.Last night however he was sitting on my shoulder while my husband and I were having pizza and a piece of peporoni dropped and he ate a little bit of it (i know i know fattening but it was honestly a very small piece) and he seemed to like it. I have tried putting the fruits/veggies in numerous places in and on and around the cage with no luck. I try every day twice a day.. All my other birds look forward to their fruits/veggies is there anything you can think of that I might not have tried that can get this guy to consume fresh fruits/veggies. NONE of my birds are on a strict seed diet and I dont want him to be either..Thanks!

Mine wasn't big on fruits and veggies.. but I had one of those sprout bins in her cage and she loved it.. It's a little white box that you but the seeds in water them, but the lid over them and the sprouts grow through the lid..

that wasn't the exact one I used, but similar..

He is young and it will take time for him to want them. If the breeder or pet store didn't wean him to them he doesn't know what they are. It some times takes months. Try putting a little seed on top of the veggies and make sure the veggies are cut small. Also take some and eat them right in front of him and as mmmmm. They gets them interested. Other human foods are ok but in very little amounts. You have to watch out more for salt and fats than anything. While you are eating have a plain unsalted rice cake for him. He will not realize you are eating something different ( just yet ). When I have pizza I give what ever bird is with me a small piece of the crust and they love it. Can he be out at the same time as another bird who will eat veggies? If he sees that bird eating it he will go to the dish and try. He will come around.

lovebirds are pretty picky eaters. My lovebird use to never go near fruits and veggies even if I skip a meal or two. He will only eat his seeds and pellets (mostly pellets and seeds as treats) I am not sure why but I could not get him to try his veggies and fruits. So now he's on a pellet diet which he likes (kaytee rainbow pellets) and he'll eat his fruits and veggies too!

Here hows I got him to try it. He is very attached to me so whatever I am eating, he wants it too. I would eat a grape and make it a big deal of how good it tasted. So it made him curious and hopefully will make yours too. So I peeled the skin off and I offered him a little and he ate it! for the first time he ate something other than pellets and seeds. I give him very little portions at a time to get him used to it. I cut them into very little pieces and let him pick at it. I put it in a flat plate on the bottom of his cage without his regular dishes and he'll just pick at it. he's been eating fruits and veggies for about 6 months now and doing great.

Another thing you can try is put seeds in a pot with dirt and try to sprout them yourself. When they grow, just wash them and let him enjoy. I do that and its pretty fun watching him pick at it. I hope this helps. Good luck to you!

Its nice to know that your other birds love to eat fresh fruit/veggies. This is what I tried with my birds : I give them exposure to one new fruit/veggie along with their seeds. I put this fruit/veggie everyday morning for 10-15 days.... In the evening, I put the one what they like. Eventually, they have started eating new fruit/veggie. It may be possible they don't like certain fruit/veggie. I have 2 birds and among them male doesn't like to eat carrot where as female love to eat that. So, it may be possible that your birds doesn't like certain fruit/veggie. Give them time, they are just 3 months old, I'm sure eventually they will eat more fresh veggies.

Please don't feel bad, but please do not have them fly around when you are having food. Some of our foods can be poisonous for them, as our food has more fat then they can digest.

Good luck!!

Don't bummard its dish with all fruits/veggies. He's probably thinking what happened to my usual favorite food? What is this?

Eat your fruits/veggies with your lovebird. Introduce it to him a little at a time, everythings new so try handfeeding as youre eating these fruits/veggies too. Its too new to him.

Our pet birds watch us what we eat and seeing that we can consume so much of one thing makes them to want & taste it too. Praise, touch, cuddle the other birds that eat their fruits & veggies and make sure that lovebird is watching too. Lovebirds are cute small bird a little of fruit or veggies goes a long way.

I had a love bird for 15 yrs and he wouldnt eat the fruits and veges either, so even though I didnt want to I had to resort to the seeds. Obviously your bird doesnt have the taste for the food you are trying to feed him, just make him happy and give him what he wants.

just an idea... might work. I tried it and since then... my birds were ok with it. (this might souond harsh but honestly... it might work for you) offer him the fruit and veggies... if he does not like... then continue giving him his seeds... just continue doing it. Perhaps try removing his water in the morning... (not all day. birds dont drink constantly so he will be ok) and when you supply fruit and veggies... get his wet so the water is on them... this might make him eat them because he wants the water. DO NOT KEEP HIS WATER AWAY MORE THEN *8* HOURS.

if he does not eat them... maybe he does not like them. he might be a pickey animal. in that case... try eating them and let him have a taste.

good luck. hope that helps something.

My keets would not eat fruits or veggies when I first got them. I just kept trying, now they eat just about anything.
