Because faith has become confused with loyalty. Loyalty which is based upon real knowledge (of some person or some organization) is a good quality because it brings people together to accomplish things they couldn't do alone. Having loyalty to some dogma or doctrine which has no basis in reality and no evidence to back it up is folly. The problem is that people say faith when they mean loyalty. Faith in reality is simply the act of believing something only because someone says it. This is not a good quality. Other wise, in court cases you would need no evidence other than someone's testimony.

If you read the posts, the answers on this board to many questions by religious folks there are plenty of people out there answering in a negative way. There are plenty of people out there who think that faith in a God means that person is a number of negative things. When I asked how my belief in God and Jesus hurt others, people cited some extreme examples such as:
- Religious people are ignorant
- Religious people don't take their kids to the doctor
- Religious people hunt witches (have to laugh at this one)
- Religious fathers kill their kids
- Religious people brainwash their children with hellfire and damnation
- Religious people try to convert everyone around them
- Religious people are delusional
- Religious people shouldn't have a religion unless the also believe in a spaghetti monster
- Religious people give all their money to corrupt church leaders
Anyway, the people I know do not necessarily explain faith as a good quality, but it's more like they are excited for me that I have a relationship with God. I don't have friends at church who think I am a good person because I have faith. In fact, there was a guy who came to our 'gel group' (small group bible study meeting at my home) for over a year before he accepted Jesus and God. He was treated just like anyone else and I knew he was a great guy either way. When he did find faith, I did not think he was an even better person...I just felt glad for him.

faith is something we all practice on a daily basis. not just faith in a god. faith is the substance of things hoped for the evidence of things not seen. so yeah i would say it's a great quality.

Everyone has faith. Most sit in a chair without checking it or start their car mindlessly every morning having faith it will start. The problem comes when people are told they have to have f aith in God. They don't want anyone or anything having reign over them. But faith is in us all sadly most wont have faith in the one that died for them, Jesus Christ and will put perfect faith in the next bridge their car crosses without thinking twice about it.

"The work of the [Inner Spirit] constitutes the explanation of the translation of man's primitive and evolutionary sense of duty into that higher and more certain faith in the eternal realities of revelation. There must be perfection hunger in man's heart to insure capacity for comprehending the faith paths to supreme attainment. If any man chooses to do the divine will, he shall know the way of truth. It is literally true, "Human things must be known in order to be loved, but divine things must be loved in order to be known." But honest doubts and sincere questionings are not sin; such attitudes merely spell delay in the progressive journey toward perfection attainment. Childlike trust secures man's entrance into the kingdom of heavenly ascent, but progress is wholly dependent on the vigorous exercise of the robust and confident faith of the full-grown man."

FAITH IS VIGOROUS and ROBUST.

The reason of science is based on the observable facts of time; the faith of religion argues from the spirit program of eternity. What knowledge and reason cannot do for us, true wisdom admonishes us to allow faith to accomplish through religious insight and spiritual transformation.

The more of science you know, the less sure you can be; the more of religion you have, the more certain you are.

The certainties of science proceed entirely from the intellect; the certitudes of religion spring from the very foundations of the entire personality. Science appeals to the understanding of the mind; religion appeals to the loyalty and devotion of the body, mind, and spirit, even to the whole personality.

God is so all real and absolute that no material sign of proof or no demonstration of so-called miracle may be offered in testimony of his reality. Always will we know him because we trust him, and our belief in him is wholly based on our personal participation in the divine manifestations of his infinite reality.

The Inner Spirit is who unfailingly arouses in man's soul a true and searching hunger for perfection together with a far-reaching curiosity which can be adequately satisfied only by communion with God, the divine source of that Inner Spirit. The hungry soul of man refuses to be satisfied with anything less than the personal realization of the living God. Whatever more God may be than a high and perfect moral personality, he cannot, in our hungry and finite concept, be anything less.

So, this is why faith is dynamic and considered to be even more than just a good quality. It is a living essential.

I've paraphrased and added comments to a longer paper linked below.

Faith is dynamic, living, robust, vigorous, never lazy, always thinking and progressive. Having faith takes work, discernment, motivation, honesty, determination, fortitufe and most of all a thirst and hunger for truth.

It depends on your ideals.

I see it as a weakness.

But that's just me.

Now if I wanted someone to follow me without question I would tell them that their faith is a good quality. You see it all the time in fanatical organizations and movies. Did you ever watch Underworld? Kate Beckinsale had faith that Victor loved her and was looking out for her. Then she found out at the end of the movie that he was the one who killed her family.

Wonderful how faith works.

Having faith means staying loyal, resisting temptation, practising perservance etc.

However, in my views, man is contradictory. There's just this one side of him which wants to believe being religious = being morally upright in society's perception. This assures him that he is a"good" person. It's got todo with how he wants others and himself to see WHO he is.
