It is okay when the colors are bright, but during dark scenes like in mystery or thrillers, I can't make out the picture because it is so dim. I have the settings at the brightest they can be. It is a JVC 27" that was brand new about 4 1/2 years ago. Is it worth it to fix it or should I just buy a new one? I am looking to only spend about $150-$200.

It is very unlikely that it is economically repairable.

The prices for 27" CRT TVs at Walmart seem to run about $250 for brand names and sometimes as low as $200 for cheap brands. These include digital tuners for the new DTV channels.

You might want to look around for a good used CRT TV. These are real cheap these days because a lot of people are replacing them with flat panel TVs.

Starting in Jan 08 you should be able to take advantage of a government coupon program to get a digital conversion box for about $20. These will let an old analog TV receive all the new digital (DTV) channels.

Additional Info:

One of the other answers refers to a "booster". This are called "CRT boosters", "filament boosters", or ."CRT brighteners". Installing one of these might give your TV a little extra life, it might also quickly burn out your picture tube.

You would have to open up the TV to install it. Because of the high voltages inside a CRT type television, I don't recommend opening a CRT TV unless you have training/experience in electronics. Paying a TV repair tech to install it brings the price of the repair into the not "economically repairable" range.

Color NTSC picture tubes have three filaments. One is burned out or about to burn out. This cannot be reparied. A repair shop might be able to order a replacement or find an equivalent picture tube. But, it would be rare and cost in the range of a genuine antique item. You can usually get an estimate for $20 or so. But it may be better to offer it for parts and put the money toward a new HD model.

It can be fixed but it isn't cost effective. Sorry you need to buy a new one. Mabe you can get a display model or something similar ask at your local stores.
