I am looking for a gold sun shaped mirror. I found one that I like the shape of on ebay , but the color is horrible. I'd just paint it if I knew it would stick and wouldn't peel off. Has anyone done this?

The key is to rough up the finish a bit so that paint will adhere. Just use a little sanding with a high-grit sandpaper or steel wool first.

I painted some poly resin outdoor chairs a couple years ago, two coats and then one coat of clear coat (that was spray paint.)

Krylon now makes a type of paint that is made to cover plastic. Though I just used Valspar brand.

My chairs are still in good shape (though I store them inside in the Winter.)

Yes you can if you use a primer made for for plastics and resins. Zinser is a very good brand of primer that Home Depot carries. I have used it many times on plastic items so I'm sure it will work. I have used whatever kind I had at the time since all of them will work with plastic, ceramics, etc..
I think Lowes, Sherwin Williams etc. do also.

The different types they sell are called: B-I-N, 1-2-3 , Cover-Stain, and Bulls Eye Odorless. These are the surfaces that most of the different kinds will adhere to which will allow you then to paint your poly/resin item:

INTERIOR
Drywall
Cement Board
Plaster
New Wood Trim/Doors
Plywood
Brick & Concrete(Aluminum/Galvanized
Wood Paneling
Fiberglass Doors
Glossy Paints & Clear Finishes
Ceramic Tile/Formica and
Wallcoverings

I'd sand it lightly (very lightly), and then two light coats of spray enamel. There is no reason to use a primer on a a resin surface if it's rough.

Ask at the place where you will be buying the paint. with proper prep and priming you should be able to paint almost anything.
