They're not. Not in most places, I don't think. The legality is all that matters. You can get married by a judge and leave religion completely out of it.
We had a Christian marriage a long time ago, mainly to keep my family happy. But if I had to do it all over again, I think I would have had a non-religious ceremony.

They are not. Marriage is accomplished when a man and a woman commit to each other before God. No priest or pastor is needed to validate it.
Most people like religious ceremonies because it helps cement the relationship before the Law, but not before God.

It's human nature. We enjoy ceremonies. ESPECIALLY for those "once in a lifetime" events like marriage.
What? Oh. My cat tells me that lots of people have several marriages. Well. They still like ceremonies.
Plus the gifts. Dancing. Drinks. Food. Music.
