I believe you should only give when it feels right to you.
I think you should be sure you know where your donation is actually going before you give.

However if someone shows up on your doorstep and you feel compelled to give and it's not a burden on you, there's nothing wrong with that. If it turns out they're criminals, they will pay one way or another and at the end of the day you had a good heart and listened to it.
That's what really matters I think.

I never give money or sign anything at the door or in the street. If they're genuine then they'll give you some literature to have a look at in your own time so you can make your own decision.

I too like Jehovah's Witnesses, Mormons and evangelical Christians to call so I can argue theology with them. They've not managed to convert me yet, and I've left more than a few with doubts and questions of their own. The trouble is that they tend to call during the day when I'm at work or at really inconvenient times, like mealtimes.

There ARE a lot of scams out there. Any legitimate 501(c) charity should be able to point to documents showing their organization and what they're doing.

I make all my donations directly to the organizations I support. I almost never give any money to people who knock on my door, or stand out in the median at intersections.

If you think its a scam it probably is a scam. Ask them what organization they are with, Then check them out on the Internet. If they are legitimate, give your donation to the main office if that is what you want?

It's only righteous to give to those in need. Judging who is in need is a difficult to impossible task. Personally, I wouldn't give money to anyone asking for donations at my door. It takes me a lot of time of careful consideration and prayer before donating to anyone.

Lots of people are good. Not giving to people who come to your house uninvited is not bad. Often they are scammers. Trust no one and believe nothing. Christians are brainwashed to think they are worthless scumbag sinners from birth. That is another lie. Use good judgment and do your homework before giving to any charity. Especially a religious charity.

That's why I'll donate my money only after I've had time to do my own research on the organization in question.

Research first, always. If theyre legit, they wont mind giving you contact info for them so you can donate in a week or so after youve had a chance to find out who they are.

Why not donate to your local animal shelter or domestic abuse shelter or something other than a church if you're unsure of the intentions of the person knocking at your door?

Tell them you will research their organization and decide if it is something you wish to give to. Ashk them for a website and then go to one of those other websites that track charities - like guidestar, org or charitywatch.org - and how they spend their money. Just tell them that you never donate over the phone or at the doorstep, but that you will consider them when you have researched them.
