I brush twice a day and floss but they hurt like hell when I do. I am backpacking right now and won't be back in the USA till end of October. Is there anything I can do in the mean time to at least make them not get worse so I can go to a dentist when I get back?

Sounds like gingivitis. Try one of the products like Glyoxide, that contain peroxide, to cleanse your gums after you brush. Some medications and lowered immunity can cause flare ups of gingivitis. See your dentist as soon as you can.

Edit: Oops! Backpacking eh? Check your first aid kit for some peroxide or other antiseptic that can be used orally. Rub the peroxide generously onto your gums 2 or 3 times a day. Seek professional treatment as soon as you come home.

The only way to keep them in check is to keep on brushing and flossing at least twice a day. The reason your gums hurt is the presence of bacteria and plaque on the root surfaces of your teeth, and you may also have cavities that can complicate the situation. Take Ibuprofen to reduce inflammation and control its soreness.
See a dentist for periodontal treatment and evaluation.

Try using a wooden toothpick gently along the gumline. If you get the plaque off the teeth at the gum line then gently through the teeth themselves it make a huge difference. My dental hygenist told me of a woman who when she came in for her cleanings it would be a total blood bath.

Then she came in and her cleaning was a breeze. The hygenist asked her what she was doing differently and she was using the toothpicks just as I mentioned above.

This might be the answer you are seeking.

If they hurt that bad get back NOW!! Your oral hygiene is more important than an expedition...isn't it?
