The answer depends on the calibre of the weapon used and the size of the textbook.

A small calibre round such as a.22LR will go through a phone directory, I know i've tried. You would need several thick books together to stop say 9mm Parabellum handgun round. A 7.62mm (0.303) rifle bullet with pierce a concrete breeze block wall of a house and come out the other side aslong as nothing else hinders its path. Look out for Mythbusters on discovery channel thay normally do stuff like shhoting things to see if they are bulletproof.

It actually depends on the bullet, the textbook, the distance and the weapon. There are a lot of factors.

Depends on a lot of factors, such as the size of the book, as well at the caliber of the round...so the answer is really yes, and no.
