The Bible says, "You have not, because you ask not; or because you ask amiss." (paraphrase)
I think we can go to our Father with all our needs, He is concerned with even the smallest and seemingly most insignificant things in our lives. I don't think we should be constantly going before Him with our hands out looking to "get" things from Him, but we shouldn't be self-sufficient either. As long as we are praying in God's will for us, nothing is off limits. He knows our needs and desires anyway, and wants to bless us. That doesn't mean we get everything we want either. He also asks that we be thankful and bless others.
That Scripture is not just about material things either, it also refers to the things of God. The more we know God and His word, the more accountible we become. We are required to "do better" because we "know better." We are held to a higher standard than those who do not know God or His word.

You know that's the exact problem in a nutshell. Why don't we pray to God or "talk" to him without asking for something.
some people tend to be always needy and constantly asking.
Just for a simple change- thank God for all the blessings.
The scripture says it all. People are never satisfied with what they got so far by way of -----material things. God does and should expect more from us though.
Sometimes it's good to pray for others . Esp if they are in pain or in a lot of stress right now. Everybody in one way or the other has a cross to bear. God is always there to help us bear ours.

Christ also said that if a disciple asked God for a fish, would the heavenly Father give him a stone? The corollary is that if we asked for a stone, God would give us a fish. If we ask for material riches, we might just get poverty. If we ask for honour and respect among men, we might just get humility. Our earthly nature often does not want the gifts of God, but if we pray for a gift from God we should also pray for the wisdom and strength to accept whatever He has in mind.

To answer your question, we should look ate the passages before it to get what it really means. Look at the context.
Jesus is talking about our basic approach to life. Are we anxious and lacking trust in God, constantly trying to gain control of things that often are beyond our control? Or do we trust God to provide and concentrate on honoring relationships by pursuing righteousness and serving others with our resources? Two things tell us the answers to these questions: our heart and our pocketbook. Our heart can tell us if we are anxious, and our pocketbook can tell us if we are generous. Both tell us if we are trusting God.Be Faithful Stewards (Luke 12:35-48)

The Bible encourages his servants to talk to him in prayer.
We can always ask for the things that we need , IF they are in line with Gods will.
For example , if we pray for a new Red Ferrari , he wont give it to us , as this in no way helps us to follow God or assists us in living up to our Christian life and promote Gods purposes.
However if we pray for the things that we really need, food , shelter , enough money to get by and help with our imperfections then God will give us these things.
--That is of course if we are truly doing his will.
If We show by our life style that we enjoy the perverted things of Satan's world or we follow un-Christian pagan teachings, then NO , Jehovah God will never answer any such prayers.

There is a book called "Your Best Life Now" by Joel Olsten, this is an amazing book that answers just your question.
Essentially it's getting your husband to understand that God has great things planned for him, it's your husband who has to be open to his blessing. It is true that the Lord already knows the desires of your heart, but he asks that you pray for them because it shows your faith that in asking, you will be blessed.
It's important to make sure that he knows that if you ask for something you be grateful for it. So if he is applying for a new job, he could say, "Lord, I thank you for this job opportunity you have placed before me. I am grateful for your blessing, and pray that my resume shines above all others. In Jesus' name Amen."
I would suggest picking up this book for him. It isn't too expensive, I bought one for my mom for Christmas this year and it only cost me $7.50 CAD.
I will keep you and your husband in my prayers.
God Bless!

I heard a story about this one time. It goes like this. A man died and went to Heaven. When he got there Jesus was standing there waiting for him. Jesus told the man that He wanted to show him around Heaven. The first place that Jesus took that man to, was what looked like a huge warehouse. In this warehouse were boxes and boxes, row after row. Each box had a persons name on it. Of course, curiosity got the best of the man, and so he asked Jesus about the boxes.
Jesus told the man, "These are boxes full of "blessing. There is a box for each of you." Well of course the man got even more curious and asked Jesus where his was. Jesus took the man down one row and over to the next, and sure enough, there sat a box with the man's name on it. The man asked Jesus if he could see what was inside. Jesus said that it would be find, and the man quickly opened the box. Inside, to the man's complete disbelief, was item after item of things he had always "hoped" for and "longed" for while still on earth.
The man stood up and asked Jesus, "Why didn't you ever give these to me while I was on earth?" Jesus replied quietly to the man, "Because you never asked me."

He is all powerfull.
The wise man in the storm prays to God, not for safety from danger, but for deliverance from fear.
It is the storm within which endangers him, not the storm. Fear not for HE has overcome the world!
My God is so great, so strong and so mighty, there's NOTHING my God cannot do.
Romans 8:38-39, “For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

You can never ask too much of God in the sense that there is nothing that God can't do. However, there are a lot of things that God won't do. Therein lies a significant difference.

Reassure Him that God is not limited in what He can answer.
Tell Him that this is the same God who parted the Red Sea....and delivered the Hebrew people from the hands of the Egyptians.
And this is also the same God who will quicken our spirits on the Day of redemption to eternal life.
Praise God!
