Find out the amount of kibble you should feed him (on the side of the food bag compared with his weight/age), and then split that in two, feeding him once in the morning, once at night.

It's better for the dog's health to feed them more than once a day. I feed my dogs twice a day, morning and evening. Whatever amount you're feeding your Lab in the evening, split in half and feed him that much in the morning. Like people, animals benefit from a more balanced meal distribution.
Note this very real health concern:
Feeding dogs once a day can result in a health problem called "bloat," which is the second leading killer of dogs. GSDs, Dobies, Weimies, Setters, Danes are susceptible to this. Bloat results from dogs gulping their food, ingesting air; their stomach twists, shutting off blood supply, and putting pressure on other internal organs. A dog can die within hours-- a very painful death. Even with immediate treatment, a third of dogs will still die.
Feeding a dog once a day increases their chances of gulping their food from them being more hungry. Please safeguard your dog's health.

It depends on the dog. When my dog was alive, a pointer mix (she lived to be 13), I used to feed her only once at night. My mom has two pitbulls (they are two years old) and they get fed twice- once in the morning, and once at night.
If your Lab 'seems' hungry when you wake up in the morning, feed him then and then some at night. If he is doing fine with once a night feeding, then keep him on that routine.
Every dog is different. If you have any concerns about it, ask your vet. He/she knows your dog, and will advise you to do only what is best for your lab.
Good luck!

Feeding twice a day is better for many reasons, it keeps their appetite level, their weight under better control and helps prevent a fatal condition call GDV. All my dogs are fed twice a day, the MinPins just get a a.m. biscuit and a p.m. meal and the 2 large dogs get their meal split in 2 equal meals.

Your dog is becoming older and will start needing different nutreints to stay fit. I like to see meals spread out to keep him satisfied. His size to plays a big factor in how he is fed. My boxer is fed 1 cup dry and i large can wet both in the morning and night. she needs that much because she stays outside and runs all the time. so the extra nutrients are burned off. Ask your vet though if you feel uncomfortable with this answer.

Stay with his feeding schedule. Opinions are like a** holes EVERYONE has one!
Feeding him once at night is great. Feeding him once in the morning is great. Feeding him twice a day is great. Feeding him three times a day is great.
As long as he gets the recommended amount!

this really depends on you and your circustances really and what the dog is use to you say he is 5years old and normally fed at night i would keep it that way.
i have 2 gsds that are fed normally at night and they seem to have settled into the routine the only time i change it is if we have a show and have to travel at night then they are fed lunch time. the only thing i would suggest is if your dog is hungry in the morning give him some cereal in the morning or split his meal into 2 1 in morning 1 at night

It's a mistake to feed a dog once a day. Especially a Lab!!!!
BTW, if your dog is 5, you should be able to spell his breed properly.
