Kumbhakaran and Vibhishan are both Ravana's brothers and good fellows. Both of them told Ravana that what he did is wrong. Kumbhakaran did not persuade Ravana persistently and gave up his righteousness and got perished.
Whereas Vibhishana persistently tried without giving up his righteous persuasion and driven out by his brother . He could survive because he chose a right path.

Kumbhakarna was a good person. He knew Ravana was doing wrong by forcibly keeping Sita with him. Also,he knew tht Ravana wud be defeated by Rama. So,he tried advising Ravana against going for a war. But,stubborn as Ravana was,he wud not listen to his younger brother.
However, more than being a good person,Kumbakarna was a loyal brother.Even as children,Kumbakarna always stood by Ravana's side. So,he fulfilled his brotherly duty by fighting for Ravana, fully knowing tht he was inviting death by fighting against Rama.Had he gone to Rama's side like Vibishana,Rama wud surely hav forgiven him and let him live ! But,he preferred death rather than cheating on his brother !
He was truly an example of an ideal brother !
