i went to the hairdressers to go back to brunette. they insisted on doing a skin patch test to see if i am allergic to the dye. i have been dying my hair for over a decade and never had any reaction. but this time my skin turned red, only for a couple of minutes tho. i have dermagraphia (my skin briefly turns red when pressed) and i think this is what happened but the hairdressers didnt believe me and refused to dye my hair. if i dye my hair brunette over blond at home, will it work? ive heard of people doing this and it turning green, is this a myth?

I've had the exact same thing happen, I colored it back to brunette at home and nothing bad happened; I've only heard about it going green after a swim in a pool. By the way, I also have a very sensitive scalp so...

I'm assuming you were brunette prior so it would not be strange for your scalp to turn red during a session turning you blonde. The chemicals - ie peroxide/bleach/etc - used for blonde are more aggressive and can cause redness/irritation to the scalp.

I would say it is PREFERABLE that you have it done at the salon. I would recommend it. If not the one refusing to do it, another one. You wouldn't be the first. But do give yourself and your hair a few days "rest" - maybe a week - before you go ahead and change again. It's advisable.

Then decide whether you want a home color or at the salon. Either would work - I think you should be fine. Salon always turns out better but boxed brunette should work w/o green!

It's no myth, go to a salon and have it done right.

PS: When the hair is lightened before it can to colored to a dark shade a red base needs to be added back to prevent green. These people that tell you they did it at home and nothing happened just means it didn't happen yet. You can tell at home nightmare colors easy. Don't mess around, your hair is your appearance, and green hair is only nice on the Jolly Green Giant.

Yes. You can do it at home with no problem. When you choose the shade you want, make sure you stay away from the ash shades. These will make your hair look green/grey (ICK! ) You also want to stay away from anything with the word "golden" in it, as it could make your hair more red than you would like it to be. Your best bet would be to choose a shade that has the work "natural" in it (like "natural light brown", "natural medium brown" or "natural dark brown" ) The "natural" shade will make it so that whatever your natural undertones are, will stay (like, if you have natural red undertones, you will see them a bit after).

Also, after you color it, just don't go in a pool for 48 hours & you'll be fine.

I really don't know anything about hair color - but I DO know that my wife added blonde to her hair in the summer of 2006 and, even after numerous hair cuts, its STILL blonde in some areas - seems like its never going to go back to black... but its ok - she looks HOT with the blonde anyway. :-)

i would definetly have it done at a salon... color correction. doing it at home is fine when you are just doing the same color or even changing by a shade or 2 but something your planning should be done by a professional
