They all say to charge them before First Use. Rechargeable batteries are subject to drain even without use, although various types are worse than others.

NiCads are, or used to be, subject to "voltage memory" so OCCASIONAL complete discharge was necessary. Never do so by shorting the battery terminals as you'll simply destroy the battery. Just deliberately allow the device to stay powered until the batteries are dead.

NiMH and Lithium-Ion batteries do not develop "memory". And rechargeables are not good for "only" a certain number of recharge cycles. That's just an average. Like saying everyone's heart is only good for a certain number of beats, true in a general sense, but each person's individual case is a LOT different.

Usually yes. Better safe than sorry. You can damage some (NiCad) if you discharge them too deeply for too long. Other types NiMH (nickel metal hydride) and Lithium cells are more tolerant of abuse.
