Hello power2bowl:

You have a good start. To be selected for a service academy, you will need good grades, proven leadership, good physical condition and a sport. You will want high-level mathematics, science and physics courses on your transcript. If you can take college-level courses through your community college, this will help as well. Surprisingly, a part-time job looks good on the resume, as it shows you are a self-starter and ambitious.

If you are interviewed, you may be asked why you want to attend, and what will you do if you are not selected. What is your ultimate career goal? Why? Think about these things as well.

Contact the navy recruiter in your area and ask him/her for advise; you can get an appointment from your representative, congressman/woman, the president and/or vice president. There are also other back-door routes to the academy; enlisting in the navy, attending academy prep school and passing with high honors.

If either of your parent's were awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor, you have a free pass; staying in is the difficult part.

Best of Luck
