Because they use evil to try to ward off evil.
The Bible condemns the use of 'spiritism' (Leviticus 19:31,20:6,27)
Satan wants people to believe that astrology or lucky charms(not the cereal!) or medium.
Demons are quite real as is demon possession so one should be careful.
the best thing to do is not even let them in.But there are so many openings.Going to a fortuneteller can open a portal for demons.Horoscopes Weegee(?) boards,lighting certain candles to get money or cast a spell,so many things.
People use to be aware of what to do and what not to do but,thanks to Satan,people view demon possession as unbelievable.Most people don't even believe that demons exsist.
Here's a little hint.The Bible tells us that when someone dies they are dead.(Eccl.9:5,10,Ps.146:4)So if someone is being contacted by a dead relative,guess whose coming to dinner?
Some folks think that the soul gets separated from the body at death but if you read Gen.2:7 you will read that after Jah had formed Adam,and blew life into his nostrils,Adam became a "living soul".
So Adam didn't have a soul,he was a soul.
The difference is like having a dog or being a dog!

There is an old Taoist belief that conflict loves conflict. Give way to a small evil with no resistance and it will leave and not develope into anything more, because there is no conflict to support it. This will lead to peace being a natural part of life.
