There are different kinds of pills, all work differently to prevent pregnancy, but must be taken at the same time every day, usually the time your period starts. You have to be prescribed the pill by your doctor, and the packet should contain a pamphlet about how to take it. If you miss a pill you generally take it as soon as you remember, even if it means taking 2 in one day. If you miss your pill time by more than 12 hours, then you should use condoms or another form of birth control for at least a week afterward, as the protection from the pill will be gone - but you must keep taking them during this time to get it back on track.

The contraceptive pill I have, I take it for 21 days a month (I think its about that) and then i stop for a week to have a period, then i start again and have another 21 days of taking the pill.

I'm not sure how it works but i know that when on the pill and using condoms, its the safest way to protect yourself when having sex

It should be taken before could be anywhere from two weeks to a month depending on the type of pill consult your doctor about this. The pill taken after is the morning after pill and is only used in emergencies and should not be relied on.

i'm assuming you're talking about the emergency contraceptive pills...aka e.c....to be used after sex...when something might have happened. like condom breaking, forgot to take birth control, etc. and must be taken with in (i believe) 5 days (but the sooner the better).

it changes your hormone balance and you need to be on it for at least a month before you have unprotected sex ---- get your doctor or the person prescribing them to tell you all about them how they work and how to make sure they do the job --- best wishes
