Because the whole drinking and smoking thing kinda sends out a "i'm trashy" vibe and guys now a days are looking for the cheap and easy stuff, they're tired of searching for the one...they just want to pass the time in the mean time...thats waht i think anyway.....

Hate to say it kidos but smoking didn't used to be the bane of all evil, at one point smoking was considered sexy by men. Although lobbyists and activists have made a lot of progress toward abolishing smoking, I think this history still permeates even the younger crowd and it will stick around a while.

As for why, men probably found watching a woman suck a tube attractive, and obviously drunk women are much easier to seduce then sober women... Their may also be some truth to the "trashy" statement made by other posters, but my term would be "vixen" just because I'm a bit old fashioned.

I have to admit I have not been into a bar for at least 5 years and I've been off the "dating" scene for over 11 years, but I'll give this one a shot... Back in the day, it was a good ice breaker, what better way to show your good character to a lady then to offer her a light (or conversely to check out a potential male lover's character by needing a light.) Any leg up on breaking the ice was a step closer to a relationship...

Later on it became a sign of rebellion, women who were rebels were attractive to more people because of the social and political issues of the day, drugs use was very common throughout the 60's and 70's and smoking was a minor drug. Almost like a mini poster advertisement that you were a make love not war kind of person. Like people smoked together and thus found partners that were compatible.

In the 80's I think it was about a different kind of rebellion, a feeling that one was cheating death. People that smoked in the 80's knew it was proving to be unhealthy but frankly who gave a rats butt since we were all going to die by nuke anyway. I guess the impression was someone who was living for the moment and willing to take risks. If the thought is that perhaps they would be willing to "risk" a relationship (or free sex) then there is less worry about being rejected, more confidence leads to better results so you have more hook ups with smokers than with the rest of the folks that were less then confident...

I would assume that in the 90's it is more about a kinship rebellion. From what I've heard it sounds like for the most part you either smoke and date smokers or you do not smoke and would never date a smoker. Smokers can easily find each other and there is an added attraction now; they immediately have a common issue that more then likely they both feel very strongly about. (The smokers who did not feel strongly about their right to smoke quit, the ones that are left are usually highly agitated by the pressure society is putting on them to quit.)

You must be talking about the very young women amongst this earth. I'm only 21 but I don't smoke and only drink on the weekends occasionally not every weekend. It seems to be the thing that every young girl is going after besides we aren't getting any younger and this earth isn't getting any better so just live it up seems to be the attitude for most especially young!

They are in places where men are socialising or looking to pick up (ie; pub), but more lovers is all they get, no meaningful relationship, I know which i would prefer. (Not all women who smoke and drink though)

For both men and women I think it has a lot to do with attitude. Usually, people who both drink and smoke have a kind of devil-may-care, I'm-going-to-ride-till-my-daddy-takes-my-car-away spin on life that is incredibly sexy...till you actually have to live with the person.

it is acceptable that for such women there will be many such liking people, as it reflects her attitude ...

and coming to real lovers .. have to think ... dont think so ?..... because if a woman exposes her attitude in this way, which gives different impressions, do u think that there will be true lovers for her ?

i dont think it's the fact that they drink or smoke.
i think it's their confidence.

obviously they're seen as "rebels" by not living their life according to society's expectations. it's all in the attitude.
they're not trying too hard like other girls...with the really short skirts or the hollister jackets. they rarely look like they want to impress anyone.

guys are into the chase. the mystery.
...just like girls.

They may appear to be social butterflies, fun, and nice to be around (like one of the guys). Now, I must ask, when you say smoke, you do mean tobacco, right?
