My mom was a "hippie" and experimented with drugs when she was younger. She NEVER did it while she was pregnant. I am pretty smart and in all CP classes. I have a lot more common sense that other teenagers my age too. I don't think it effected her children.

drugs and alcohol do affect the children's intelligence, especially when mom is taking the drugs when still pregnant. I think it also affects the kids development after birth, because when mother or dad is sititing around drunk or stoned, the kid isn't getting the brain stimulation that he/she should. Sitting around watching t.v all day while Mom is stoned,,,,,is not the same thing as reading books, playing games outside, doing projects, going to play groups...etc. I think it's a combination of both.

I think its a matter of priorities. Children who are worked with early on, at ages 2-3 on academic things, and who are read to have a better chance at book smarts. The Head Start program was designed to help children who are economically disadvantaged to be introduced to academics early on. Parents who put little value on book smarts and don't constantly monitor their children's progress are setting their children up for hardship. Children who are pressured too much can have problems too, though.

Research shows that drugs, including pot, not only destroys your brain cells, but can damage your genes. These damaged genes are passed on to your children, increasing the risk of all kinds of physical and mental problems.

Kids tend to follow their parents actions, I think it's learned not genetic.
