Now a days the rituals are not strictly followed and on the marriage day itself they have the nuptial night.

In olden days an auspicious date or muhurtham was selected the wedding night ceremonies, called Shanti muhurtham, is performed. A separate homa or fire sacrifice is performed to ensure satvik progeny who will uphold Dharma. In the mantras chanted in the ceremony The husband prays fervently from the core of his heart that a child may be conceived. He repeats sacred Mantras during Ritu-Santi ceremony or nuptials. The new child is supposed to be conceived amidst the vibration of Mantras. Good impressions are impressed in the brain-cells of the embryo. For a real Hindu who is endowed with pure intellect and right understanding, the sexual union is not for the sake of mere enjoyment. He utilises the divine, creative, vital energy for the formation of a human body.

The Shanthi Muhurtham is the consummation of the marriage at night fixed for an auspicious time for a happy, ever-lasting married life that is full of understanding and care. Two souls united in a sacred act of fulfillment, to bring forth progeny as nature's best creation. -

In our's they usually perform Satyanarayan pooja.
This pooja is meant to remind both husband and wive of his/her changed prorities and duties. Its to guide the couple to the meaning and hapiness of being into a wedlock.
The nuptial night follows after this pooja.
Hindi films have made it look so yucky and vulgar, that nuptial night, no more seems to be a regular ordinary event from everyday lives. It seems as if it were some dark, shameful sin that has no approval, and yet needs to be got done!!!
I would suggest you to ask elder members or professional gurujis as to which poojas are important or incumbent part of rituals. Let that pooja be performed within you and your spouse's immediate family members(if at all you want to invite them to pooja). A newly wed bride has little acquaintances with her in-laws and new relations, so its best to keep this pooja within your immediate and close family members! Wish you a happy married life!
