I work a 12 hour night shift, full time. People constantly are bringing in junk food, and I have very poor self control especially with high sugar foods. I feel like once I have one item, then I can't control myself. I never had this problem until I started this position. In two years time I have gained 10 pounds. Any advice how I can control this?

Nel G. I do exercise, thank you. I am very fit, and have been my whole life. I go to the gym 4-5 days a week, and am probably more fit than you. Bonehead.

First off gaining 10 pounds in 2 years is nothing to be concerned about. Peoples weight changes over the years and 10 pounds is a normal flucuation.
Why not cut up some fruit before you leave for work and keep it in a couple of little ziplock bags on your desk (or some place handy). That way when you have a sweet tooth, you can snack on sweet fruit instead of sweets that are bad for you.

That is a problem. Try bringing your own food, making healthy choices so you know you've eaten, you're nourished and don't need that garbage. It is a good thing to eat six small meals a day. There is an herb called :"gymnema"which keeps sugar from tasting sweet. That may help you. It could make it so you don't even want the second bite. It's relatively cheap.
If you feel tempted, try grabbing a handful of recent fat, say on your belly and think about what that junk is doing to you. It is hard with so much tasty, fattening food available. Look around in public at all the people who are overweight and how difficult it is for them to get out of their cars, cross the street, etc. I don't want to have the kind of back and hip pain I can see that they have. I'm sure that you don't either. Believe me, I have had weight problems and I feel for those who still do. It is so easy to eat and so hard to loose weight until you get going with a healthy diet.
Make sure that you get enough sleep and exercise. Drink enough water and have plenty of fiber. Bring your favorite fruit to work. Also try not-too-salty nuts for protein as a snack. These will give you energy and vitamins. Good luck!
Practice saying , "No Thank You".

I have a similar situation. There's fast food restaurants everywhere and my store sells a lot of junk food.
To counteract the fast food I started riding my bike to work instead of driving. I only live 1.5 miles away. Then one of the fast food joints got a fail from the health department so I've cut down on fast food.
I always kept something healthy in my locker like nuts, dried fruit etc. Or something in the fridge like carrot and celery sticks. That way if I get hungry I have something to eat before splurging on more junk food.

Gum is always nice, because once the flavor is gone, pop in another stick. Or what you can do is bring some healthy foods with you to snack on instead, like granola or whatever you like.
Another silly sounding one (but it worked for me) is to brush your teeth really well so they feel really clean. It sorta makes you not want to eat, at least for me.
And you can control yourself, having one sweet isn't bad, so you can't think "well, I blew it, might as well have as many as I want" because that is asking for trouble.
I hope this helps : )

Bring in your own snacks! They have those 100 calories snack packs in yummy flavors like oreo and more. :) That way when they eat, you can eat! And you won't feel guilty! Let them gain weight. Provide yourself your own goodies. :)

carry around lots of minty gum and continuously chew it. candy and junk doesn't taste as good when your breath is fresh. or bring your own healthy snacks to munch on when everybody else starts eating their treats.

Bring fruit with you.
Having an apple handy can really kill those sugar cravings!
