I don't worship anything that doesn't have life or anything that does.Though I do have to admit that I often will worship a good sex partner from time to time. But I don't think that is the same kind of worship.

Why do you worship something you can't see?
Idols are nothing more than a representation of the god that is being worshiped. It helps people to visualize the god they are praying to. The idol itself is not worshiped. It's just like with the cross and pictures and statues of christ. it helps to know who you are praying to rather than pray to something you've never seen.

All religious practices can be seen as a sort of psychological trick to transform your mind in (hopefully) a positive way. This in no way is meant to demean religious practices since there is nothing more important then transforming your mind in this way.
So, 'idols' are usually objects that symbolize some sort of good or positive attribute. Jesus is full of love and compassion for example.
Focusing our mind on a Jesus that symbolizes love and compassion transforms our mind toward love and compassion.
We 'become' Jesus (love and compassion) just like an actor 'becomes' a character he is studying.

I don't worship idols. There are statues in my Parish, but I don't pray to them. They are there as reminders of certain actions (martyrs) or teachings (apostles) or Christ's Passion(stations of the cross)
Do you have pictures of loved ones in your wallet? Do you pray to them? Or do they remind you of a particular day or particular event?
Same thing.

Good question, but even idols that do have life are not to be worshiped.

The people who cant see, hear and feel GOD in their surroundings use to worship such statues which can be felt and seen and of course available for prayer.
These people do not see the reality but they are merely in the state of misconception.

i'd say that i used to because society demands it of you. we yearned for the day when we could have all the expensive trappings that make up a life, in society. i didn't realize that i was worshipping material possessions. as you live, you learn.

your treasure is your graven image.

Why do you read a two-thousand year old book and think it's "God"'s word? It was just written by human hands.

I think its because they want an image of their 'god' to focus on. such as...Budda, Joseph Smith, Money, Muhammad, Baal, Sex, etc.
Which also comes to the question; If Catholics worship Jesus...why do they have statues of the Virgin Mary?
I don't worship an image, I worship Jesus.

I do not worship heathen gods; I worship the one true God, the creator of all living things, the Father of Jesus Christ. †
