Hi

As always, it would help if you said where you were coming from. Just so we know what to compare it to.

By using your second name in your handle and the term 'transportation' I'm guessing you're American so I'll run with that! Sorry if I'm wrong

A three bed. two bath (or 1 and a half we say if it's an ensuite), should set you back between $320,000 and 500,000 unless you go to either a slummy option or a really upmarket place. That's about $US250k to $US400k. Rental is pretty much the number before the 'k' per week at the moment (a 320k house will be about $320 a week)

Education here is the best in Australia and amongst the best in the world. Completion rates for high school and 'college' as Americans say are way above average. Of course they are. Canberra is a Public Service dominated town and to hold down a reasonable public service job you need a college degree. So you would expect the kids to also go that way.

Our main University (ANU) is the highest rated in Australia by every score there is. It's rated between 10 and 30 in the world.

Unemployment is almost zero and crime is very, very low. It is accused of being a boring place. That's not really true but I can see where that impression comes from. It doesn't have the wild life of a Sydney or Melbourne, but there is plenty to do, it's just hidden away a bit.

I live here (or nearby). If you have any questions feel free to e-mail via the answers site.

Housing prices in Canberra are in general high. At present houses that are only about 40 years old are being demolished in this suburb and replaced with newer ones. It has been said that there are no bad suburbs in Canberra but it is a good idea to avoid buying really close to shopping centres. Schools are good, bus service is OK though I have only used it three times as it is quicker for me to walk to work than to drive or take a bus. Parking can be a problem and is not free in most areas, $5 a day is the price close to employment centres, $3.60 a bit further away. You can get weekly or more vouchers.

Your best bet is to buy reasonably close to work if possible.

Why not get on the sites for LJ Hooker, the Professionals etc to check out housing prices?

Also look at the "Canberra Connect" site.

A good place to look at and compare prices is in the classified advertisements in the Canberra Times on a Saturday. http://www.canberratimes.com.au

Have a look at www.allhomes.com.au They advertise the best houses to buy/rent.

The nicest place to live is in Manuka, Kingston, Braddon and Forrest, but can be quite costly. Dickson and Hackett are also nice areas and are more affordable.
