1st, you need to check your local laws to find out what is legal in your state. Then you need to take a firearms course to learn about the different hand guns & get "expert" advice on the purchase of the hand gun that is right for you. Then you need to be sure & register the hand gun & get a permit to own it &/or to carry it.
Contact you local police department, they can help you with the hand gun laws in your state, classes & permit requirements. I myself have a permit to carry a 38, but I have never felt the need...

Get a Glock, they're RELIABLE....PROVEN &TRUSTED by law enforcement. Not very expensive either. 9mm have a lot of "flip up" type recoil, I prefer a .45, the recoil is more of a "push back" type feeling. Glocks have an outstanding reputation for being reliable & never jamming. I love them because you can work on them yourself, there are only 36 parts that make up a Glock. Other guns have 80+ parts.

Glocks range from $475-$600 depending on what model you want, fixed/adjustable sights/night sights, etc.

Your best bet is to go to a shooting range, and RENT different handguns in different calibers and see what kind you're the most comfortable/accurate with, and what type of gun you feel the most comfortable operating..and what you feel would be the easiest to operate in a stressful situation.

For recreation, the smaller the caliber...the cheaper the rounds cost. A .22 would be the cheapest, a .45 would be the most expensive.

This is a Glock converted to full auto...just for a little entertainment :)

PS...I like how my answer gets thumbs down...most likely by revolver fans...try reloading a revolver quickly in the dark vs. dropping an empty mag & sticking in a new loaded one...AND semi autos hold MORE ROUNDS than revolvers. HAHAHAHAHAH

If revolvers were that great...why wouldn't the majority of law enforcement/government employees be carrying them?? Point proven!

Gander Mountain, if there is one near-by. It depends on your knowledge of hand guns and your budget. If you are relatively new to handguns start with a revolver. Buy a 357 magnum but, don't I repeat don't use the 357 Magnum rounds use the 38 special rounds until you become proficient with the weapon. When you have mastered handling the 38's try a few magnums and see if you can handle the power. 110 grains first before you think about the full power magnums (125 & 158 grains).

I agree with DJ.Revolver is best for a beginner.they are usually cheaper than semis and easier to use.4 inch barrel is good, maybe 6 if you want.Go for a .357 if its multi purpose. That way you can use .357s to defend and .38s to practice with.I suppose a .22 magnum could work as well.these guns usually range from 150-600.Taurus's revolvers seem to be significantly cheaper than other brand's.If you MUST have a semi, dozens of people are gonna say glock, but I suggest a makarov.slightly less powerful than a 9mm,very cheap (sometimes under 100$) as opposed to 350$ and up for a glock, and dependable. Also very accurate.

Revolver with a 4 inch barrel and if you live in a humid climate, then get one in stainless steel.

Revolvers are perfect for beginners and experts alike, they are rugged and very easy to understand, easy to operate and easy to maintain.

I recommend a .357 Magnum. Don't be scared of the word magnum, it's not bad. You start out using .38 Special ammo and reciol will be mild. As you develop your skills through practice, you move up to .357 ammo.

Brands to consider are Smith & Wesson, Colt, Ruger and Taurus.

Go to a few local gun stores and pick the one that is most friendly and helpful. They will also help you with every legal form you need to fill out and show you how to clean it, sell you a cleaning kit and case and ammo.

Glocks are great, just keep your finger off the trigger until you are ready to shoot and keep in a holster that covers the trigger. Don't throw loaded into a purse or drawer full of clutter with the trigger exposed. However, if your are a novice then you should consider a revolver. Expect to pay three to six hundred (depending on makel, model and condition) for your first handgun.

Any sporting goods store. If you want it just for target shooting get a .22 cal. If you want it for protection and target shooting, I woul go with a 9mm. You can get a good 9mm for around $300. I recomend Smith&Wesson or Walther.
