No one knows, but the idea is that it had legs, maybe even walked upright, and was more than likely a very good looking animal.

Maybe it was like a giant millipede thing.... or not.. Hey you know what is interesting is that this was supposed to be a punishment, but look how much poetic verse has been written about how beautiful serpentine rivers flow, or how a snake slides into the water. It is a very beautiful and graceful creature. Yeah, it slides along on it's belly, but it never gets dirty. Pretty amazing.

“Because you have done this thing, you are the cursed one out of all the domestic animals and out of all the wild beasts of the field. Upon your belly you will go and dust is what you will eat all the days of your life. 15 And I shall put enmity between you and the woman and between your seed and her seed. He will bruise you in the head and you will bruise him in the heel.”
he wasn't changed to a serpent, he was just sent off on his belly. if i (had the power) cursed you and told you to put foot to ground, you wouldn't grow legs. you already had them.i'd just be telling you to hit the road.

The irony of it all....
...the serpent being the one who is condemned to slither on his belly - making his entire being (mind as well as body) "down to earth".
Poetic Justice!

I saw this on... Discovery channel a few months or a year ago. An ancient snake species had legs and eventually lost them. They were sort of around the time of the dinosaurs.

Actually boa constrictors have remnants of legs and pelvic bones. The legs are used to hold females during mating.
