I have a house built in the early 40s. The basement has old 8" tiles. I'm not sure what they are made of. Ceramic? Something else? Anyway, can I lay self-stick tiles on these if I clean them really really well? I'm trying to make the family room more homey. My new house has 12" self-stick tiles in a basement room and it looks nice. It feels like they just laid them right on the cement.

I like the 12" tiles myself, its easer to clean and easier on the eyes, less work. And yes, you can as a matter of fact use on self stick tiles on top of the 8". Make sure it evens out as you lay each tile in, you may have to make some adjustment. But with patience you can make a complete nice flooring.

Of course you can. You can lay the larger self stick tiles over them if you like.

Just make sure that none of the old (probably asbestos) tiles are loose before you put the new ones over them.
