My puppy loves to try and get outdoors and explore off leash. It scares me because she sometimes will sit in the middle of the road! When I call her she does not come and if you walk towards her she runs. I think she thinks its a game. She has gone to training but she just does not listen. She is well taken care of and she loves us to death (her favorite thing is to sleep under the covers.) So I dont think she wants to get away from us. With a six year old always leaving the door open it is hard. When she gets outside if I open the car door she comes and jumps in but now she know if she gets in the car she will be caught. What do I do?

She is a min pin mix. 10 months old. She sits, lays down, shakes, high fives, rolls over, and jumps. When we are in the house she will come when called. She goes on two walks a day. She is a smart puppy and learned to jump all the puppy gates so now we just recently bought a four and a half foot tall one.

Teach your 6 year old to close the door. I know kids can sometimes be harder to train than dogs, but it can be done. Trust me I have an 8 and 4 year old, both know how to close the door. It does take time, patience, and repetition but your child can learn to close doors too.

Next time your dog gets out instead of walking toward her, get her attention, run the other way so she follows, then pretend to fall down. She'll come over to investigate. Praise her like she's just saved 6 orphans from a burning building, lots of yummy treats help too. Attach her leash and then play with her before bringing her back in. You don't want this to end up like your car trick.

Next go back to obedience school with her, she needs a refresher course. Lots of practice with the Come command on a long line is a very good idea too. Remember never, ever punish your dog if you've called it to come to you. They're smart, and they will decide that whatever it is they are doing, is better than coming to you to get yelled at.

Make sure both the dog and your kid get plenty of excerise. A tired dog is a good dog.

With time, patience, rewards and practice you too can have a trained dog, and 6 year old.

Good luck

you need to chastise the 6 yr old for starters and explain to him/her why it sooo... important that they don't leave the door open, a 6 yr old shouldn't be opening a door and going out the front yard to play anyway, if it's the backyard then just make sure you shut gates all the time, if there are any spots where you think she could get out then just build them over with some spare palings or even some lattice. I would say she knows exactly what she's doing, she's got you rapped round her little paw! Dogs are very intelligent animals, they can learn so many words and actions just by talking to them, they learn the different tone of your voice, try talking to her more. She could just be saying "I want to go for a walk, and if your not going to take me then I'll take off".Maybe you could invest in a kiddy-gate, but then she would probably learn how to jump it anyways. It's a long struggle with dogs, but they soon learn who's boss, IF you are consistent and the main thing you will have to do is try to get the 6 yr old to keep the door shut, observe your dog closely in the yard to see if you can find where she's getting out and then fix that problem. Kind regards, good luck

Common misconception by people.. Treat the dog good, let them sleep under the blankets and the dog will naturally listen and will never run away..

She isn't obedience trained, and you don't keep up on the training.. Or she would come when you called her, she wouldn't bolt out the door and she wouldn't run away when you approach her.. You need to do more work with her.. Either more training at home, but more likely finding a good trainer to help you get control of your dog, and to teach you how to train and control your dog..

If your dog is sitting in the middle of the road and someone hits your dog.. Are you aware you are responsible for the damage to their car?? Your dog should be leashed or in your house or your yard.. NOT on the road. You can be charged for the damage done to the vehicle ...

You need a professional to help you realize that you need to work with your dog and stay on the dog.. You are putting the dog at risk by allowing the dog to run around and playing games trying to get her to come back.. If your dog bolts out and attacks another dog, or even just scares someone walking down the street.. You risk your dog being hurt.. BAD SITUATION...

Keep her on a leash tied to you for a while.

That way, even if the door is open, she can't run out.

Randomly, while she's tied to you, approach the door. Any lunging, pulling or motion to bolt out is immediately corrected with a strong tug on the leash and a firm "NO". Eventually she will learn to ignore the door completely.

Again, randomly, make her sit just inside the door. Again, any attempts to leave is firmly corrected. She should wait until you give a command for her to go through the door.

***NOTE***
Be patient. Especially with young pups.
Some breeds are more prone to leave and not come back. Huskies & Malamutes are known for their roaming ways, and terriers get stubborn.
You have to be firm and consistent.

How about training the 6 year old not to open the door?!
You can try teaching the dog that she's not aloud outside unless she's got a lead on...
Try to get her to stay while she's inside and you're outside. Then put the lead on her and teach her to stay while you're both outside.

i have pomeranians and my male loved to do this when he was a puppy to i have literally chased him down the street in my p.j.s at 7:00 in the morning calling his name!!! neighbors were probably laughing at me...... he has since grown out of that stage and will return when i call him, he's now 2 but i used the doggie play pen gates that are portable you can fold them up or make a round pen out of them, you can block off your doorway from the inside or out by folding to fit your entry way.... they are easy to step over or fold back to go in and out of your door!! hope this helps and good luck!!!

Get a good dog trainer. Part of it is the dog is just a puppy. Puppies don't like listening to anybody just like young children. They eventually grow out of it-somewhat. I would get a trainer that shows YOU how to make the puppy behave.

Maybe find toys or something to keep her occupied in the backyard.
