yes go to the arts centre, the dux de lux is oposite it, its a resturant it has good beer and really good food!! that is also a must see, also go to the avon river... the port hills, theres a gondala yay and they r always fun!! and just go and talk 2 random people in town we are all very friendly and can tell u good places 2 go..
there is a tram that takes u around the city in about 1hour, u can get off at alot of stops and then get back on later, but the driver stops and talks about the history of christchurch, its really interesting (coming from a 15 year old with a short attention span)...when you come into christchurch, there is an information centre in the airport, there is alot of booklets on tourist attractions :)

Yip, visit the Arts centre. It used to be the old University, now it's the Arts hub. If you are around on a Sunday the markets will be open.
Close to the Art centre is the botanical gardens, lovely in the summer. CHCH is known as the garden city. Some lovely cafes in that area too.
Sumner Beach is fantastic..about 20 mins drive from the city...beautiful!!!!
And I'd suggest a meal Bridgets in Merivale..
And sample NZ wine...Brilliant!!

I suggest The Gondola - http://www.gondola.co.nz , The International Antarctic Centre - http://www.iceberg.co.nz (located near the airport)
Take a circuit around christchurch city for a sightseeing tour in a restored heritage tram http://www.tram.co.nz/

They have so many festivals, so please check and if they have any festivals, join it!! It'll be interesting.
Walk in the Hagley Park. It's a very big park with lots of trees and flowers. You can relax. And in the park , there is a big museum. Nature, history, people... you can learn much about NZ there.
And those two course, you don't need much money. When I lived there, this park was my favorite :)
Have fun in NZ!! Bon voyage!!
