I have braces. One ofmy wisdom teeth are slowly but surely coming in,and it's crooked. I went to the dentist a few weeks ago and they wanted them out asap. The only problem with that,is i went to my orthodontist and they said that it would be better to wait until I got my braces off, due to the healing better and the pain wouldnt be as bad, unless they started hurting me,well, the one that I have now is in fact starting to hurt me. Should I just go ahead and get them out now and take my chances on them not healing well?

My daughter, who wore braces until last Novemeber, has this situation. She had to get two of her upper teeth pulled, which left room for the wisdom teeth to come in. Since they are fully emerged and not causing any problems, the orthodontist says they can stay. Her problem is with her bottom teeth. She did not have any extracted for her orthodontic work and the wisdom teeth are showing signs of being impacted. The orthodontist wants them removed but the dentist wants to take a wait-and-see approach. She's got a metal bar across her bottom front teeth and if it's removed, those teeth will become crooked again due to the pressure from the wisdom teeth.

I would suggest going with the orthodontist. They will also want the wisdom tooth out ASAP because you would have to start over with braces when the teeth put them out of alignment. I had 2 impact wisdom teeth, and I got them pulled after 9 years of them coming in and it had not damaged anything yet. Just plan on having wisdom teeth pulled after having braces off, since they are coming in crooked, they WILL hurt after they are removed (mine hurt for about a week!)

Before you decide to take out your wisdom tooth, let me ask you a question? If the wisdom tooth bothering you? If it is not bothering you, why take it out. No every wisdom tooth is problematic. This current trend towards extracting every wisdom tooth is a myth and driven by dentists and Oral surgeons. Who am I to make that statement? I am a dentist myself and published several articles discussing the indications and contraindications towards extracting wisdom teeth.

So the bottom line is, if the wisdom tooth is not bothering you leave it in place. The wisdom teeth will not make your teeth crooked after braces. However do take them out it is causing recurrent infections and destroying bone around the adjacent teeth. An yes your Orthodontist is right, wait until your Orthodontic treatment is done. Hope That helps. Thanks
