The right mattress is all about what feels best to you. Most mattresses are designed to support your body completely no matter how firm or soft they are. When you shop for a bed, lay as you normally sleep. Make sure the mattress fills in the contours of your back and/or waist when you relax completely. Make sure you can't slip your hand between yourself and the bed and this will assure you are getting complete support. Memory foam is wonderful in this aspect, but it tends to loose it's shape. Look for a style that incorporates a lot of latex foam which is proven to keep its shape. Some brands eliminate springs entirely using latex as the support system and this type of construction gives you soft contouring support. Top it off with memory foam (at least and inch!) and you will get a great nights sleep. Most stores will allow you to exchange your bed if you do not sleep well after a month of becoming accustom, so go out on a limb! Make the sales people get you up to date stats and you will be happy with your informed and comfy selection. Sweet Dreams!

It sounds like you are too trim and muscular to get any sleep on a firm mattress. It will make your pressure points (shoulders and hips) hurt by morning.
Go to Macy's and try out a Stearns and Foster matterss. One of the best models is called the Dali. It is a plush Euro pillowtop mattress. It is soft, but has plenty of support to give you good sleep. It has 1/2" of memory form to conform to your body contour. And it had a layer of latex foam to help it hold it's shape for years.
You will be very happy when you wake up in the morning after sleeping on it.

The stores usually will help you find the right fit but you have to make the ultimate choice by laying down on all types, soft, medium, hard. And take some time doing it. It's still a bit difficult to decide after a few moments or so whether it's right or not, but it helps. Otherwise, invest in a sleep number bed (our next one) and dial in whatever works for you.

Flat out go check out a Tempurpedic Mattress. Ive had one for close to ten years and I absolutely love it. At this point they have a huge range of styles and price points available, the more expensive ones are not necessarily any better. Check out the Classic or Deluxe. You almost certainly have some local stores that carry them. They should come with a 90 day trial period, just make sure you don't have any hidden restocking/shipping fees.

When you go to a mattress store, take your own pillow and take alot of time choosing just the right one. The salespeople want you to be happy. I went to Sears and spent over two hours trying out almost every one they had. Don't be bashful, take your time and spent alot of time "sleeping" on their samples. Thats what they are there for. And the reason I bought mine at Sears is because they will let you return it for a 100% refund including delivery charges. Or you can exchange it too.

Would you prefer to lay on a piece of foam or a spring mattress? Spring mattress will win every time :)

I have had a same problem, looked at all kind of brand, kind, sizes, and even water bed. But I am settled with a Futon Bed mattress directly laid on the floor, then bought me 4 inches thick Memory Foam to set it on top of Futon. I also changed my pillows with Memory Foam (they have different kind for side sleeper, back sleeper, etc). I have bee so happy with Memory Foam system. You do not have to set it on Futon on the floor of course, you can set the Foam anywhere, I think you would like it.
