I am all for immigration, if that person is to truly become a citizen of the country he/she is applying to. It seems that today many immigrants of Canada and the USA want status only to get the benefits of being a citizen of our countries, and once they're in, they do not wish to assimilate, and choose to build a miniature version of the country they fled within their new found home.
The following letter was written by my 78 year old mother, and posted in a local news paper. It expresses her thoughts, and mine regarding many of todays immigrants, as opposed to the immigrants that helped build these two great countries years ago. There's a big difference between the immigrant of today, and the immigrant of yesterday!

Here's what my Mom had to say:

"So many letter writers have explained how this land is made up of immigrants. Maybe we should turn to our history books and point out to people why today's Canadian is not willing to accept the new kind of immigrant any longer.
Back in 1900 when there was a rush from all areas of Europe to come to Canada, people had to get off a ship and stand in a long line in Halifax and be documented. Some would even get down on their hands and knees and kiss the ground. They made a pledge to uphold the laws and support their new country in good and bad times. They made learning English a primary rule in their new Canadian households and some even changed their names to blend in with their new home. They had waved good bye to their birth place to give their children a new life and did everything in their power to help their children assimilate into one culture.
Nothing was handed to them. No free lunches, no welfare, no labor laws to protect them. All they had were the skills, craftsmanship and desire they had brought with them to trade for a future of prosperity. Most of their children came of age when World War II broke out. Canadians fought along side men whose parents had come straight over from Germany, Italy, France, Japan, Czechoslovakia, Russia, Sweden, and so many other places.
None of these first generation Canadians ever gave any thought about what country their parents had come from. They were Canadians fighting Hitler, Mussolini and the Emperor of Japan. They were defending the Freedom as one people. When we liberated France, no one in those villages was looking for the Ukrainian-Canadian or the German-Canadian or the Irish-Canadian. The people of France saw only Canadians.

And we carried one flag that represented our country. Not one of those immigrant sons would have thought about picking up another country’s flag and waving it to represent who they were. It would have been a disgrace to their parents who had sacrificed so much to be here. These immigrants truly knew what it meant to be a Canadian. They stirred the melting pot into one red and white bowl.

And here we are in 2007 with a new kind of immigrant who wants the same rights and privileges. Only they want to achieve it by playing with a different set of rules, one that includes a Canadian passport and a guarantee of being faithful to their mother country. I'm sorry, that's not what being a Canadian all is about. Canadians have been very open-hearted and open- minded regarding immigrants, whether they were fleeing poverty, dictatorship, persecution, or whatever else makes us think of those aforementioned immigrants who truly did ADOPT our country, and our flag and our morals and our customs.

And left their wars, hatred, and divisions behind. I believe that the immigrants who landed in Canada in the early 1900s deserve better than that for the toil, hard work and sacrifice those legally searching for a better life. I think they would be appalled that they are being used as an example by those waving foreign country flags, fighting foreign battles on our soil, making Canadians change to suit their religions and cultures, and wanting to change our countries fabric by claiming discrimination when we do not give in to their demands".

This might help explain why there is some resentment towards the more recent influx of immigrants into Canada and the USA.

Look my family are legal immigrants they had to wait like 10 years to get their visas... they waited in mexico... like it should be. Yes every mexican wants to have a better life and a better future I agree because some places in Mexico are so sad to see and thats the govenments fault, but thats why there are rules thats why there are seperate countries. If you think about it.... before when would you hear about illegals getting deported or getting killed or etc... no not like today and you know why its happening today because illegals are demanding rights that are not even theirs. Yes they do get ugly jobs and they do get jobs that many americans wont do... but let me tell you that i know alot of people that are illegal and they have better jobs that we americans do... (by the way I was born here)... they get false social securities and visas and stuff... and that not fair to the ones that have waited for years to do everything the legal way. Right now someone in Chicago is using my social security and its messing it up my record ( and let me tell you that they dont always get bad jobs... this girl that is using my ss is working in a hotel), what should i do? I mean how can you defend that?

America does not hate immigrants. They do not want any illegal aliens to come and live here regardless of their reason. The same is true in every other country on earth.

There is no such thing as a job Americans won't do. There are lots of bosses that do not want to pay people what the job is worth. As far as seasonal jobs go, there is no reason why a legal accommodation cannot be made to transport people in to do the work and transport them home afterward.

Don't mix legal immigrants with illegal aliens. They are two different things. There are plenty of legal immigrants that arrive every year. They are most welcome. Not so the illegal aliens. Try to find another country in the world that accepts as many immigrants as America does. We do not deserve such criticism.

People don't hate immigrants, they don't like criminals. And don't kid yourself, Americans have been doing those very same jobs and more and much better for less money. How do you think this country was built? No one likes to be played for a sucker and that is the problem. Here you have a group of people that want everything this country has to offer and doesn't want to contribute to the system or obey our laws. You can't go to Mexico without a passport, nor should you be able to. Maybe it would be okay with you if I sent my cousins to live with you for awhile and you can pay the bills for them, they'll cut your grass for you so it will work out even. That doesn't seem so fair now does it?

I totally agree with Susan. Its not a matter of hating anyone much less immigrants. Well over most of the population's ancestors were immigrants at one time (I'm German, Irish & Indian). Its a matter of being illegal immigrants. They might be working and doing jobs that others would turn their noses up at, but in the long run, we are paying for them to be here. They are getting special benefits because they are illegals. If any immigrant wants to come to this country, just do it the legal way!

It's not immigrants - it's ILLEGAL immigrants that are the problem. How do you know Americans won't do these jobs? If we give the people who are here illegally the pass home & keep them out until they can follow the rules, don't you think the country might be a little better off? Also maybe employers would pay better wages if they couldn't get some poor soul trying to feed his family on $10 a day.

This link is meaningless. I have no problem with legal immigrants. We just lost our hospital closed due to 81 million dollars in loses over the last 10 years. Every dime was traced and about 78.4 million of that was due to illegals using the facilities and never ever paying any of their bills. 80% of their bills were for having babies. The number of students who have been admited to the school system here who do not speak any English has grown by 600% over that same 10 years. The school board has totally freaked out, because the last 3 levies have failed and class room size the start of this school year averages 38 children per class and of those in 1st thru 6th grade 48% do not speak English. Of those 92% speak Spanish of the Mexican dialectTo my knowledge 99% of these children are here illegally). The rest speak Russian, Chinese, and Aribic (To my knowledge all those children are here legally). Why do I hate illegal imigrants? My wife works at a prision with 1600 inmates. 68% of whom are hispanic(of those 87% are illegals) Every one of the inmates, who are married, families recieve SSI. I had 2 massive heartattacks last year and my heart now will only function at 36% of what it should be. Social Security tells me I have to much education to recieve Social Security Disability. WTF?? I should like, support, tollerate illegal imigrants? Not in this lifetime!!!!!!!!!!

Why don't I persuade you with the same line of bull over, and over again, and see if you will adhere to what I WANT. Because for the trillionth time, ALL those JOBS are JOBS Americans will do, and have done long before your loving illegals came into the picture. And the latest BS you, and Bush are trying to say is that the American TRUCKERS do not want to do the JOBS that they are already DOING.

Have you seen how they responded to yours, and Bush's propaganda? I hope they make you, and Bush feel the pain he claims he feels for the Americans. He is a liar, just as YOU are. Get used to being called traitors.

Attention:

Let's make some points crystal clear -

Americans have no problem with LEGAL IMMIGRANTS.

Americans have a huge problem with ILLEGAL ALIENS.

There is a difference. There is no such thing as an illegal immigrant.

Last but not least, if every illegal alien left this country (one way or another) the rest of the US would experience the following:

1. No change with the exception of -
2. Lower crime rate

Crops will continue to be harvested, dishes will continue to get washed, motel and hotel rooms will continue to get cleaned. You're not that important...sorry to burst your bubble. I think every American citizen will agree, if America lost a few million criminals from their country, we'd all sleep a little better.

You can take THAT to the bank!

American do not hate immigrants. America is the most welcoming country in the world. The problem is not with immigrants but with illegal immigrants from Mexico who are crossing the boarder and overwhelming the system. Millions of people from around the world migrate to the U.S legally every year.. People who want to migrate to America should do it legally, and Mexicans should be no exception.

You seem to be trying to make it look like only Americans do not want illegals aliens among them when it is actually the vast majority of all citizens in every nation. I can produce many many more links than you that can show that illegal aliens do more harm than good.
Moreover, your argument is akin to this argument; We as Americans should praise all criminals because if it weren't for them then all law enforcement agencies and their families would be with out a means of supporting themselves. Which is a ridicules way to look at it.
