Personally I despise DVDs and would have thought with the technological advances we've made something far better would have come along. I mean, their picture quality isn't really THAT much better than videos, they're so fragile that even a tiny scratch can ruin them, you're forced to sit through the producer's logos and copyright warnings, and there really is no justification in their price. So what's next and will it be an improvement?

No, actually he's right. There really is no improvement in the video quality of DVD's, in spite of the hype. Video is 480 lines of resolution. Putting it on a DVD is still 480 lines of resolution. Sticking a turd in a BMW doesn't improve the quality of the turd.

Scratches, endless previews, 10 minute copyright warnings, the only advantage to DVD is that it's more compact and you can jump to some scenes. Although, to be fair, price really isn't any different than it was for VHS.

Still, what's the alternative, VHS? Those only gave us 280 lines of resolution. So, for all the cons about DVD's, even the pros of VHS doesn't measure up.

As for wishing we'd advance faster, well, home video has only been around for a little over 20 years. So, those over 20 seem to enjoy the improvements, and those under 20 need to spend some time making their own way in the world before demanding what the world is going to do for them next.

Hm. Here is someone who obviously

Likes to rewind tapes
Likes to spend 10 min trying to find his favorite scene on a VCR.
Does not believe that doubling the video resolution improves picture quality.
Does not believe that 5.1 Dolby and surround sound is any improvement over 2-ch analog audio.
Likes snowy tapes, especially after you watch the video 2-3 times.
And all these using a $35 DVD player!!

I think you must be watching videos on a lousy TV. Try watching a DVD with surround sound and you will feel the difference.

It is tough to duplicate a true movie-theater experience, but with a good home-theater HD system it can be very close.

One can debate whether HD over SD DVD is a major improvement, but if you can't see the improvement over VHS, then you will never see it!

Well now there is going to be a battle between Blu-Ray and HD DVD, it's VHS vs Betamax all over again. So I'm not going to upgrade until one of them is phased out (I think Blu Ray will lose out because it is Sony only.)
HD isn't that much of an improvement anyway.

They will make the screen much bigger.
And put it in a much bigger room.
With rows of seats
And give it a name
something like
Cinema
